HUSSEY

Christopher Hussey was one of the original settlers of Newbury and Hampton. He was born at Darking, in Surry, England in 1598. The name came into England at the time of William the Conquerer. Hugh Husey, married in 1014 Helen, a daughter of the third Duke of Normandy, Richard II, and sister of Robert, father of Duke William, the Conquerer. The name changed from a German form to the French and afterwards anglicized to Hussey. After the conquest, the family was seated in counties of Kent, Dorset and Lincoln.

He was admitted freeman in 1634 having journeyed to America aboard the William and Francis which arrived 5 June, 1632. In 1635 he was one of the first settlers in Hampton, New Hampshire. In 1639 he served as representative and again in 1658, 1659 and 1660. He was a provincial counsellor of New Hampshire and proprietor of Nantucket Island, Mass. Christopher died in 1685. He was married to Theodate, daughter of Rev. Stephen Batchelor.

1. John Hussey m. Rebecca. John and Rebecca were Quakers, but had difficulty following the discipline. He held several offices but his declination of oath taking caused much trouble. They were residents of Hampton, New Hampshire, now Seabrook. Notes: John and Rebecca Hussey are ancestors of U.S. President Richard Milhous Nixon. His lineage is through their son John, and his son John. Nixon is then doubly descended through this John's son Record Hussey (by his first wife). Record Hussey's daughter, Lydia Griffin had a son, Amos Griffin who m. Edith Price, the daughter of Elizabeth Hussey. Their daughter, Elizabeth married a Milhous, and their son Franklin was Nixon's grandfather.
