MY CLIFFORD LINE

ALFRED CLIFFORD was born in January 1845 in Howard County, 
Maryland.  He, his wife and children are all listed on the 1870 
Census as a Mulatto which represented a light-skinned black mixed  
with white.  He was 25 years old and worked on a farm.  Alfred's  
father was an Irishman born in Ireland.

Alfred married MARCELLA, born 1844 (per 1870 Census; born 1842).  
She was a Housekeeper.  They had 3 children listed on the 1870 Census:


 ROSE ELLA, born January 1864.  
   (She was 6 at the time of the census.  She married 
   GEORGE WASHINGTON CRAWFORD November 1879 at age 17.
 LETTIE was born in 1866.  She was 4.
 SUSAN was born 1867, and was 3.
(On the census with the Cliffords above was William Dorsey, 
Black male, age 45.)

The children listed next were not born as of the 1870 census.

Rubou Clifford was the brother of Alfred, Sr.  He is listed on the 1870 
census records just before Alfred with the Dorsey Thompson family* 
(a white family, see below).  He was born in 1858 (13 years younger 
than Alfred) and is listed as Black.  It was said that he fought in the 
Spanish-American War in 1898.  He would have been about 40 
during that war.
