Savage Jaycees FAQS

How were the National Jaycees (the Junior Chamber of Commerce) formed?

The movement toward the modern Jaycees began in 1915 under the direction of Henry Giessenbier Jr.  His ideas quickly spread and on January 21, 1920, a national organization formed with twenty-nine chapters.  Today, the membership consists of approximately 5,000 local chapters with some 230,000 members nationwide.

What is the goal of the Jaycees?

The Jaycees provide personal development and leadership training for adults 21-39. Much of this development occurs through service to the community along with interaction between members and fellow Jaycees.

How many members are there in the Savage Jaycees?

The Savage Jaycees consist of approximately sixty members.

What are the activities in which the Savage Chapter gets involved?

The Jaycees get together for projects to help the community as well as social events.  Jaycee projects include events like Operation Childprint.  This project consisted of photographing, measuring, and fingerprinting hundreds of young children. The goal was to have a quick informational card in the event a child was missing.  Through donations, the chapter also raised money for Missing and Exploited Children of Minnesota at the event. The DARE Bike-A-Thon was another project in which thousands of dollars were raised for local drug awareness programs. Of course, the Savage Jaycees also get together just to have fun. Social events include picnics, camping, and many other fun events.

How much time commitment is there?

Basically, you choose the level of time involvement.  A member can be heavily involved as Chapter President or can simply pick the events he/she wants to be involved in.  About once a month you may get a phone call asking you to attend an event or help with a project.  However, we understand if you are already busy.

Is there a fee to join?

The annual individual membership dues are $50.00 and dual memberships are $90.00.  A payment plan can be arranged if needed.

How is the local Savage Chapter run?

Basically, the organization is a democratic one.  The chapter has a Board of Directors which provides leadership for the organization.  These are elected positions.  Although the Board is there to provide leadership, proposals must be presented to general membership for a vote.  This occurs at the formal meetings on the first Tuesday of each month.  Members who are not on the Board may also propose ideas which will be voted on by general membership.

Are children welcome to attend events?

While some events are geared only for adults, children are welcome at many of the events.  In fact, some events such as the Fathers Day project where kids make gifts for Dad, are designed for participation from kids.
