West Virginia

Purpose:

I am a Sociology 432 student at Marshall University in Huntington, West Virginia. We were assigned fieldwork, to promote a more positive image of Appalachia. Some people participated in the Women's History month "Read-Out," while others opted to send articles to their local newspaper, or the school's newspaper, The Parthenon. Other suggestions included doing a quote for the West Virginia Calendar, coordinated by Mr. John Grace, and my personal favorite, making a website devoted to counteract the negative stereotype of Appalachia. So, that is what i decided to do, because I have always been interested in computers and the web and I found this to be the best way to express myself and my beliefs about West Virginia's beauty.

First of all I'd like to point out some places where I have been here in the state and let you see for yourself how beautiful West Virginia is!

Ogleby Park

I took these pictures in 1993 while I was participating in the All-State Music Festival in Wheeling, WV. This particular place is called Ogleby Park, and even though I have lived in this state my whole life I was astounded by the beauty there.

Cheif Logan State Park

The state parks in West Virginia are a great place to see nature and sometimes you can get up close and personal with it too. This picture was taken in Chief Logan State Park, which is in Southern West Virginia. I'd like to say thanks to the friendly deer for not shying away from the camera.

Summmersville Lake

When i was a little girl, my parents used to drive to Summersville Lake and we would spend time there with my grandparents for a short vacation. I still think that it's a beautiful spot for fishing and just watching the scenery. Here I am driving my uncle's speed boat. Look out, 4 year old at the wheel!

Marshall University

Another beautiful place that I see regularly is Marshall University, in Huntington. I love walking through campus in the fall when all the leaves are changing colors and also in the Spring when we have so many flowers and trees.
The dogwoods on campus look so bright and beautiful. I also happen to think that campus looks quite splendid when there is a fresh snowfall covering everything. I've got more pics from Marshall, just click here to see them.

So as you can see, West Virginia has beautiful scenery, but I am here to tell you there is lots more to see and to do. I haven't tried White Water Rafting yet but I've been told that we have the best rivers in the nation for such an adventure. Skiing is another activity that West Virginia ranks highly in.
