Koekelare, a village between city and countryside.

Koekelare is a little village located in the West Flanders in Belgium, at about 25km (13mi) from Ostend. It's well-known for it's architectural beauty and yet being so close to nature.

In 1990 it was awarded the 'Agora Award' for urban renewal. The architecture of the shopping center supprises everyone while the 'Sala Thai', an eastern curiosity adds a little mystic.

If you like the countryside, you can follow the 'Koekelarenoene' route, a bicycle trip of about 40km (20mi) along wich you can sense the exiting silence of the countryside. From Koekelare's hills you can enjoy the panoramic views.

Do you enjoy a firm walk through the forest ?
Do you love nature ?
Around 5km (3mi) of paths lead you through the local forests where Koekelare's pine tree reigns.

In the village center there's an oasis of green and silence called "De Mote" with a fishing pond and a wealth of trees and herbs.

The kids can play at the local playground near the sports centre, while you can enjoy a delicious local beer.

Are you looking for people that enjoy life itself ?
Then visit one of the many pubs and cafe's. You can also meet a lot of people at the weekly market on tuesday.

Certainly worth a visit is the renovated brewery. She was awarded a prize as the Flemish monument of 1993.

The etches of Käthe Kollwitz found a permanent place in the Käthe Kollwitz tower of the brewery.

In the Yves Rhayé room you can admire the art of this internationally known painter and sculptor.

In what used to be the stable for the horses of the brewery, you can now find the museum of the Frenchmen. It's a story of poverty and diligent Flemish labor in the beet fields of France.
In those days, there were a lot of seasonal workers in the Flanders but Koekelare was the main centre of them.
