Rev. James Gray Rose , pastor of the Presbyterian Church of Mercersburg, Pa. is the son of
James McKinley Rose.
Andrew Rose settled in Mercer county, Pa. in 1794 on a tract of land known as the Rose estate, becoming an iron master. He helped to make cannon-balls for the revolution and was one of the brave soldiers of that struggle. His wife bore the name of Gray, and one of his daughters bore the name of Mary. He had three sons, James, Jacob and Ephraim., all of whom were soldiers in the War of 1812. James Rose, son of Andrew, also became an iron master, and he participated in the War of 1812. He married Martha McKinley, while the sister of James Rose, Mary Rose, married David McKinley, brother of Martha McKinley Rose. James was the grandfather of Rev. James Gray Rose, and Mary as the grandmother of President William McKinley. James Rose was probably born in Chester county, Pennsylvania, in 1783, and the entire family came from the vicinity of Philadelphia. The children of James and Martha (McKinley) Rose were as follows:
1. Sarah Rose married James Irwin and left a family.
2. Hannah Rose married James Miller, left a family.
3. Susan Rose married Benjamin Slater, also left a family.
4. Martha Rose married John Alexander, left a family.
5. Ephiraim Rose married Grace Slater, left a family.
6. A daughter whose name is not known, married and left a family; all died young.

8.William Gray Rose married Martha Parmelee, was twice mayor of Cleveland, in 1877 and in 1891 and at one time also a member of the Legislature, as well as a candidate for lieutenant-governor of Ohio, but declined to permit the nomination to be made on account of his relationship with William McKinley, who was then a rising statesman and member of Congress.
James McKinley Rose, seventh child of James Rose and Martha McKinley was the father of Rev. James Gray Rose, was born in Mercer county, Pa. on the family property, in 1821. He became a teacher when only twenty years of age, and then took up farming. His wife bore the maiden name of Marie Catherine Brandon, and she was he daughter of James Brandon, also of Pine township, Mercer County, Pennsylvania, where he was well known and active. He was a man of great scholarly attainments, and esteemed by all who had the honor of his acquaintance. Among his warm personal friends he numbered John Trunkey, a member of the supreme court. He served in the Rebellion and with him in the war were fourteen nephews, twelve children were born to him, namely:
1. Laura Kate Rose married Rev. T. M. Watson of New Wilmington, Pa. they had one son Charles M. Watson M.D. of Allegheny Co., Pa.
2. May M. Rose married G. W. Carroll of Middlebrook, Pa. , They had two sons, Clinton Clay and James Rose, both at college.
3. Marie F. Rose, unmarried, a physician of Harvey, Ill.
4. Homer Jay Rose, superintendent of public schools of Sewickley, Pa. a suburb of Pittsburgh, married Margaret Shaw, and has three sons, Don, (a graduate of Princeton), Gray and Roy.

6. Nancy E. Rose married J. Emery Brandon, of Butler, Pa. and had three girls, Rose, Catherine and Eleanor.
7. William B. Rose married Genevieve Stephen, of Lincoln, Nebraska is an attorney and assistant attorney-general of the State. He has one girl Genevieve who is the twelfth generation in a direct line from Elder Brewster, who came over in the "Mayflower".
8. Halleck F. Rose married Catherine Cameron, lives in Lincoln, Nebraska and is one of the most prominent lawyer in the State, doing a large amount of work in the Supreme court.
9. Lillie Rose, died at the age of twenty.
10. Suella Rose, died at the age of twenty one.
11. Alice Rose, died at the age of five.
12. Maud Esta Rose, married Ernest Polland, of Minnehawka, Nebraska, who is a
member of the Legislature and has been for several years.
