Born: Abt 1683 Surry Co., VA Married: Abt 1704 Surry Co NC 1) Faith GRAY (d/o William and Elizabeth JARRETT GRAY) born ?1685 ?died ca 1720 2) Sarah CRAFFORD NEWSOM, married by 16 Feb 1725 estate settlement of 1st husband John Newsom; (See below) Died: Abt 10 Feb 1739 (Inventory of Estates, Bertie Co p. 150) Parents: Robert and Elizabeth Prime?William3 was the patriarch of the NC Ruffin family. We believe that he moved with his family and new wife, Sarah, to Bertie County...then a precinct in Albarmarle County around 1726. See the DEEDS below.
Although we do not have the WILL, there is an Inventory of William 3 Estate filed in "loose estate papers" of Bertie Co at the NC State Archives. Based on the date of the inventory (Feb 10, 1739), we think he died in late fall, 1738.
William was probably 30, Ethelred 28, Robert 26 and Samuel 22. William and Robert were named the executors of the estate.

Capt William Gray was born about 1648 in Surry Co.VA. He died in 1719 in Surry Co, VA. He signed a will on 3 Jun 1719 in Surry Co. VA (proved 11-18- 1718) and left legacies to his sons: William, Robert, Joseph and Thomas GRAY To Gilbert, his son, and to daughter Mary Gray, Priscilla Gray and Faith RUFFIN. To Grandchildren: William Andrews, Elizabeth Edwards, William GRAY, and William RUFFIN. Son, Gilbert, was appointed Executor with Nichl. Maget, Robert Judkins, and Samuel Maget. Capt. Wm Gray married Elizabeth Jarrett (d/o Richard JARRETT) about 1681 in Surry Co, VA. Elizabeth died about 1714. Capt Wm Gray is believed to have been the son of Thomas GRAY and his 4th wife, Mary FOSTER (born around 1600 in England). Thomas GRAY was born in 1593 in England, emigrated to VA at the age of 15 (1608) and died in James City, VA in 1658.

Elizabeth was sole heir of her grandparents, Alice and William CARTER, and her parents, Mary and George CARTER. Wm Carter had a land grant 21 May 1638. This land passed to Carter Crawford, son of Mary and George and brother of Elizabeth. Joel Newsum was a witness for deeds of sale where William Ruffin and wife, Sarah, sell land he inherited to his brothers, Ethelred and Robert in 1738. John Newsum (1674 Surry-1724 Surry) was son of William and Anne Sheppard Newsom; and the grandson of William Newsom (1614 Eng-1667 Surry- Rich Neck Plantation) This plantation eventually was bought by Robert2 Ruffin (1646- 1693) ================son of John and Sarah Newsum================== Joel Newsum was born about 1708; died May 10, 1752 in Northampton Co., NC. Some believe that his wife was a Rebecca Dickerson/Dickinson (daughter of John Dickerson/Dickinson) but this is not verified. We believe that Joel came to NC along with his mother. If he was born about 1718, he would have been about 18 years old at the time the Ruffins moved to Bertie Co., NC. Joel's son, Isaac Newsom married Mary Molly Dortch (Of Nash Co.,NC) Younger children mentioned in his father's will included a daughter, Anne.
