The NEWMAN Genealogy

Searching for clues~~~~~~

Very little is known about the Newman family. I heard recently that the HOLBERT and NEWMAN families arrived together on a ship that landed at Charleston, South Carolina. I would be glad to learn more about this if anyone has information.

Upon checking for birth, marriage and death certificates, I learned that the Court House in Rutherford County, North Carolina burned down in 1907 and nearly all the records were destroyed. At one time Rutherford County covered a large area. Later, it was divided and a part of it became Lincoln County and a section of it became Polk County. My relatives lived in the section that is now Polk County near the town of Tryon, North Carolina.

When my grandmother was only five years old her mother died, and she and two brothers were raised by her grandmother, referred to only as Granny NEWMAN. Later on, her mother's two sisters played a big part in raising her. Aunt Charity HOLBERT, never married and continued to be part of the family until the 1950's, living with my Grandmother's family off and on.

Here is what little I have to work with:

Dave NEWMAN b. ?, d. 19 Nov 1933, married Rachel Elizabeth HOLBERT b. 1872, d. 6 Aug 1904

Clarence NEWMAN married Orphia FISHER, two children, Betty and Mary Dean

Nell Jay NEWMAN married George Fredrick SWANSON, four children, Claudia, George, Jr., Daniel and Gordon They are all deceased.

Clyde NEWMAN, no information except he may have had a daughter named Margie

I have just met some HOLBERT/NEWMAN cousins from around Rutherford County on internet. They have helped locate the parents of Rachel Elizabeth HOLBERT and given us a starting point with which to work now. It's beginning to get exciting.
