Sewing

I love to sew. I have an older Bernina and enjoy sewing with it. I also have a White Serger and have had a blast stitching up all kinds of things. I sew clothes for me and the girls, gifts and I also make things that I sell at craft shows.

I have made many things to sell at craft shows. I make baby bibs, heat resistant curling iron covers, and the most popular item is doll clothes and accessories. My daughter Elya became interested in the American Girl dolls and I knew I could sew clothes for her doll and have enjoyed it so much I have continued making them.

I also find piecing quilts a real joy when I use the serger. I don't have the patience to tackle really complicated designs, but I enjoy the finished product. Now, if I could just find a speedy way to quilt them...

Since writing this, I have acquired another Bernina and an antique Singer Featherweight (the girls want to sew, too!). I am also quilting more.

Reading

I also love reading. I have limited myself to reading no more than two "for pleasure" books a week. I would never get any schooling done with my previous reading schedule.

My favorite reading is historical fiction. My mother got me started when I was in Junior High when she gave me a book by Jean Plaidy. It was on Lucrezia Borgia. I couldn't get enough information on her or the time she lived in. I spent many hours in the library searching for more. I went on and read many other books on many other historical figures. It sparked an interest in history which still is a big part of my life.

I guess that my interest in history is the reason we chose to use Sonlight Curriculum in our home school. I have been enjoying the books just as much as my daughter - and I don't have to count them as "for pleasure" reading if I am pre-reading them for school...

Cooking?

I am finding that cooking is enjoyable. I still don't like to bake cookies - too boring and repetitive.

When we got married, I could read a recipe and follow it to the letter to come up with food for our table. Too bad the recipes all used prepared ingredients like cans of this or that with all the extra salt, sugar and those really yummy preservatives ;). Kedon had cooked in restaurants and knew a bit more about what to do in the kitchen. He helped me try some new things (took me out of my comfort zone).

I have gradually been cooking healthier and healthier. It is wonderful to find new flavors come out in a dish, and to know that God has blessed us with a wonderful gift not only in the food He provides, but also in our taste buds!

Soapmaking

I have just started the great and addicting adventure of soapmaking. I am having a wonderful time! It is so rewarding to use a bar of home made soap, scented with just the scent I want and leaving my skin so soft. I hope to market soaps at craft shows, too.

Miller's Homemade Soap Page

I've recently started making bead and wire jewelry. This is a lot of fun and my daughters REALLY like it (something about girls and jewelry - brings out the princess in them!).

This page only contains a few of my interests, I will update this page occasionally with more stuff I do to keep busy..
