Sevierville Is Where The Smoky Mountain Fun Begins!

Sevierville, the county seat of Sevier County, Tennessee, is the first city many people see when they arrive in the Smokies. Just minutes from Pigeon Forge, Gatlinburg, and the Great Smoky Mountains National Park, Sevierville combines a relaxed hometown atmosphere with ready access to hundreds of vacation attractions and recreational opportunities.

The atmosphere in Sevierville is friendly, relaxed, and fun. Downtown features a beautiful brick courthouse with a four-sided Seth Thomas clock that still chimes every half hour. A bronze statue of Sevierville's own Dolly Parton adorns the courthouse lawn. And the entire downtown area encompasses Sevierville's historic district, where a walking tour unfolds the history of the nation and its expansion westward.

Sevierville also keeps the modern traveler in mind, with accommodations ranging from family motels to romantic mountain hideaways. Shopping is some of the best in the Southeast. Offerings ranging from mountain crafts to antique emporiums to outlet malls featuring famous brands. There are restaurants for any taste, from fast food to fine dining, and outdoor activities including tennis, horseback riding, whitewater rafting, and golf...Eagle's Landing, a beautiful new Arnold Palmer Managed Golf Course, opened in 1994, and it can be anyone's country club for a day.

Sevierville is also an ideal business location, especially for the tourism industry. More than 11 million people visit the Great Smoky Mountains National Park every year, and Sevierville is located at the crossroads of the major highways entering the park from Tennessee. The workforce is solid and reliable. Sevierville has proven to be a successful location for service businesses, manufacturers, and suppliers to the building and retail trades. Schools are above average, and almost 60 percent of high school graduates are college-bound. Healthcare includes one local hospital and five major medical centers in nearby Knoxville.

Sevierville is one of those rare cities whee you can honestly say that it's a nice place to visit -- and live. It's often been called your hometown in the Smokies.

                         Getting There...

Sevierville is located in a picturesque valley at the foot of the Great Smoky Mountains. Take Exit 407 off Interstate 40 just outside of Knoxville, and downtown Sevierville is 10 minutes away on Highway 66. For a more scenic route, try U. S. 441 South from Knoxville or 441 North from Cherokee, N. C.

The Forks of The Little Pigeon River was explored and settled around 1780 by Isaac Thomas, A Virginia trader to the Cherokee Indians. Sevier County was established on March 31, 1785 and named in honor of Colonel John Sevier. Sevierville was established as the county seat in 1795 and The Forks of The Little Pigeon River was chosen as the location. For many years and even today some mountain folks still refer to Seveirville as "The Forks of The Little Pigeon River". Sevierville is now one of the most historical towns in Tennessee.

Sevierville has turned into one of the most popular tourist places in the world and is often compared to Branson, Missouri. Upon visiting Sevier County a traveler will often find new buildings under construction. Almost all new construction here is aimed at many of the 12 million tourists that drive through here each year. Some new construction in the area is a new project called "Governor's Crossing". Just some of the new features planned for this project include 150 acres of land, a 25-acre acre shopping mall, country music theatre, a brewery-pub, and ten restaraunts, a factory outlet mall, a resort and spa along with a complete water recreation park. All of these feature will be designed to make anyone feel at home while visiting the area. To find out more about the area, follow the links provided below and have fun!

The Smokies

Great Smoky Mountains National Park is one of the largest protected land areas east of the Rocky Mountains. With over 500,000 acres of forest, the Smokies contain an enormous variety of plants and animals. In terms of biological diversity, a walk from mountain foot to peak is often compared to the 2,000 mile hike on the Appalachian Trail from Georgia to Maine. Centrally located within a two day's drive for half of the nation's population, Great Smoky Mountains National Park has the highest  visitation of all the national parks in the country. There are between eight and ten million visits to the park annually, and these people come to take advantage of a wide range of activities in the park and surrounding communities.

Programs offered by rangers and interpretive displays located at the visitor centers and roadside exhibits explain the unique aspects of the park so that visitors may better uderstand the environment around them. More importantly, these programs stress why it is crucial to preserve environments such as the Great Smoky Mountains.  Culturally, the park has an unequaled collection of log buildings, including large two-story dwellings and working grist mills -- over 75 historic structures. Designated historic districts preserve buildings that reflect the southern Appalachian way of life in the Great Smoky Mountains.
