National Military Cemetery Webring

The National Military Cemetery Program was begun by President Abraham Lincoln on July 17,1862 when he signed legislation authorizing the creation of national cemeteries for "...soldiers who shall die in the service of their country."

About the National Military Cemetery Webring

It is the purpose of this webring to identify and link sites documenting the hallowed places which have become the eternal camp of those men and women who served either the United States of America during any armed conflict, or the Confederate States of America during the War Between the States, and who now rest "in honored glory".

What is a web ring?

A webring is a group of websites which share a common concept or subject. This ring, for example, links sites which relate to any cemetery or cemeteries in the National Military Cemetery System of the United States, or any cemetery where combatants of the American Civil War have found eternal rest.

Who may join the National Military Cemetery Webring

Any site which follows the precept of this site, stated above and which agrees to abide by the guidelines. This includes entire sites, or single (or groups) of pages within sites, which are dedicated to any national cemetery of the United States, whether the cemetery is in the United States itself or in a foreign nation.

Subject mattter may include any or all of the following:

  • Cemetery history
  • Photographs
  • Maps
  • Interment lists
  • Notable interees
  • Tombstone inscriptions
Of course, these are not the only things the site may contain; it's a general list of suggestions. HOWEVER, the site must be dedicated to a location which is the final resting place of members of the United States Armed Forces.

Who decides who gets into the ring?

Simply put, I do. If your site adheres to the precept of the ring and, in my opinion, meets the following content guidelines, you'll get in.

National Military Cemetery Webring content guidelines

This webring consists of sites which are meant to be informative and educational to persons of all ages. To that end, the following Member Site guidelines are established.

By submitting your site for inclusion in the National Military Cemetery Webring, and - if your site is approved for inclusion in the ring - by participating in the ring, you agree that your site will adhere to these guidelines at all times.

  1. Member sites must be web sites or web pages with valid URLs. This is not a mailing list, so please don't ask to join if you do not have a web site which fits the ring's purpose.
  2. Member sites will at all times respect the fact that the National Military Cemetery System had its beginning during the Civil War, or War Between the States, and so includes sites which are the final resting place of both Union and Confederate soldiers.    In that all of those soldiers fought and died vallianlty for their causes, member sites WILL NOT promote the notion that either of these groups of soldiers, or their respective causes, was or is inferior to the other.    Politics are fine, but the purpose of this ring is to document the sites where these men and women rest for eternity; it is NOT a forum for individual political viewpoints.
  3. Member sites shall contain no full or partial nudity except as occurs in the statuary of the documented Cemetery.
  4. Member sites shall have no references to, or depictions of, alcohol, tobacco, or drugs.
  5. Member sites shall contain no disparaging or derogatory remarks against any political, ethnic or religious individuls or group.
  6. Member sites shall not espouse, endorse, promote, repeat, or otherwise invoke the rhetoric, nor display the symbols or emblems, of any racist, skinhead, or neo-Nazi organization
  7. Member sites may not be commercial...that is, they may not offer anything for sale.
