             AT NANNA'S HOME

"Children learn through play."

"Play is children's work."

These are statements well known to anyone who has done training or reading in the field of early childhood. At Nanna's Home, play is important, so we have plenty of toys and materials available to provide opportunites for children to learn through play.

Contruction toys: wooden blocks, 'Mega Bloks' (plastic blocks which fit together), Thistle Blocks, plastic shapes which will join together, pegs which go on a peg-board and which can also be threaded onto a string.

Megan and James get creative with the blocks and cars. Cardboard cartons make good blocks for building a

rocket - or anything else the imagination produces.

Wooden and thick card jigsaws, inset boards, sequence cards, card matching games, shape posting boxes, graduated beakers and rings.

Toy cars, trucks, trains and boats. Also dolls, and teddy bears of several shapes and sizes.

Things to do outside: Play with balls, water play, sand play (well, not actually at Nanna's Home, but over the road at Nanna's church, for which she has a key, is a lovely big sandpit and we have buckets, spades, beakers, bowls and scoops, trucks, etc. which we can take there to play), play at the local play park.

We started out fully clothed! Nanna's yard and shed were well painted with water.

Messy stuff: Drawing with crayons, pencils or felt pens. Painting. Pasting cut out pictures, paper scraps, streamer curls, old birthday cards, coloured patty pans, tissue, cellophane, cotton wool balls, leaves, flower petals, pasta. Stamping. Playdough. Finger painting.

Fun with paste and bits & pieces.

Books and stories. Nanna has lots of picturebooks, board books, counting books, poems and rhymes which we read together.

In our own special 'booknook'

Pets: Nanna has two budgerigars - a blue and a green which the littlies love to watch. There is also Jet, the mini fox terrier who tolerates the children, but usually tries to keep out of their way. He likes to play his own games, especially with Rachael and Megan's dog, 'Ice', or Alex and James' 'Dusty'.
