Alex's favourites.......
When she was smaller, her favourite was a pop-up book by Julie Lacome, "Funny Business": all about what a clown has in his suitcase and in other places around his person. Some of the pages are pop-up and other have a tag which pulls down/up/across to show 'surprises'.
"Goldilocks and the Three Bears": my copy is a very small board book which came with three tiny teddies which the littlies love to play with.
"The
Three Billy Goats Gruff": an old folk tale about the three billy goats
who want to cross the bridge which is kept by a wicked troll. My copy is
retold and illustrated beautifully by Val Biro and published by Oxford
University Press.
I don't know whether it's the
interesting illustrations or the fact that I told her it was her daddy's
favourite story when he was very small. In those days I told it without
a book and acted out the billy goats and the troll. He used to enjoy
the bit when the biggest billy goat knocked the troll off the bridge.
Nanna is too old (!!!!????) to act it out now! This is now one of
Megan's favourites too.
Megan's favourites......
"Lucky Duck": Megie, like her Nanna, loves ducks. When she was smaller, she loved to look at the pictures and tell me 'duck'. This story is now also a favourite with Scott and Brad. The story is about a little duckling who is loved by his mother, father and sibling ducks, but is a slow learner when it come to things that ducks do well. This leads him into an adventure. The author is Beryl Ayers, illustrated by Lisa Herriman, published by Era Publications, South Australia. Available in U.K. from Ragged Bears, Hampshire, in Canada from Vanwell Publishing Ltd., Ontario.
"Clocks
and More Clocks": Mr Higgins discovers a clock in the attic and has to
find a solution to the problem of all his clocks showing different times.
Written and illustrated by Pat Hutchins. My copy is a Picture Puffin, published
by Puffin Books, Penguin Books Ltd.
Rachael's favourites.....
Rachael likes any book we wish to read to her if she is in the mood for a story...
"Harry
the Dirty Dog" by Gene Zion, illustrated by Margaret Bloy
Graham. my copy published by
Leopard books, a division of Random House,
U.K. Harry the Dog does
not like his bath, so hides the brush and runs away.
He gets very dirty and when
he arrives home, his family does not recognise
him. But clever Harry
finds a way to let them know he's back.
James' favourites....
When he was smaller, James loved any book, especially before nap-time. He liked my set of little 'colour' books which have their own container to take them out and put them back. Megan also liked this set, as do now both Scott and Brad. Six books in the box - red, orange, yellow, blue, green and brown. Published by Angus & Robertson in Australia. (A Dorling Kindersley production.)
Now that he is nearly four, James still likes most books. One of his favourites, which he says is a 'funny book' , is "A Dark Dark Tale" by Ruth Brown. Begins on a dark, dark moor and ends with a surprise in a dark dark cupboard. My copy published by Ashton Scholastic.
Brad's favourites....
"Tiger Jaws": a treasure I found on a bargain table outside a newsagency. (I went back and bought another one, so I have a replacement when the first one wears out!). A tiger meets other animals and frightens them away...until he meets his match. The tiger's head is a puppet and the children enjoy making the tiger's jaws go 'snap'. Written by Keith Faulkner. Illustrated by Terry Burton. Published in Australia by Koala Books, Redfern, N.S.W.
Scott's favourites......
Scott's favourites are 'lift
the flap' books:
"Baby
Boo!". a Dorling Kindersley Book, by Colin and Jacqui Hawkins.
"Thank You, God, For the Wonderful World" Text by Kath Mellentin and Tim Wood. Illustrations by Moira Maclean. Published by Openbook Publishers, Adelaide, South Australia.
