ELLIS

Kentucky and Virginia

One of my great-grandfathers was James Wesley Ellis (1885-1963), son of James Kenton Ellis and Mary Elizabeth Francis McWharter. James Wesley married (1) Lydia "Margaret" McKinney (1894-1962) on 22 Aug 1913 in Boyd Co., KY. They were the parents of six children, of whom three are still living. James and Lydia divorced in Boyd Co., KY in 1942. James married (2) Edna Christine Simmons, by whom he had three children, two of whom are still living.

The descendants of James Wesley Ellis gathered in Ashland, KY in July of 1998 for their first-ever Ellis Descendants' Reunion. For further information, e-mail me: rbngdfello@aol.com

James Kenton Ellis was born on 12 Aug 1836 in Pulaski, VA and died on 2 Jul 1889 in Fallsburg, Lawrence Co., KY. According to military records held by the National Archives, James Kenton was a private in Co. D of the 26th Kentucky Infantry during the Civil War. He was drafted and mustered in on 26 Sept 1864 in Greensburg [KY?]. He was listed as absent on his company's muster roll for the months of November and December 1864 ("In hospital Nashville, Tenn.") and January and February 1865 ("sick in Nashville, Tenn."). He was mustered out in Salisbury, NC on 30 Jun 1865, taking with him his Enfield rifle, for which $6.00 was deducted from the pay due him. James Kenton married twice: (1) Mary Bolt; and (2) Mary Elizabeth Francis McWharter.
