THE SERENITY PRAYER

"God Grant Me The Serenity

To Accept The Things I Can Not Change

Courage To Change The Things I Can

And The Wisdom To Know The Difference."

A couple of months ago, I lost a friend..not because of a disagreement, not because of a job transfer, but because he couldn't face the pain of dealing with life anymore. I lost my friend to suicide.

The majority of the people who take their own lives are suffering from a depressive illness caused when the chemicals in a person's brain get out of balance, or become disrupted. They can't think like a typical person...don't think of family and friends around them, don't think of tomorrow, but are consumed with a pain that becomes unbearable....a pain they feel they can only end by ending their life.

Suicide is still misunderstood by too many people. People who suffer from depression are afraid others will think they are crazy, so it is rarely talked about. Society still hasn't accepted depressive illness like they've accepted other diseases, such as alcoholism, and therefore, it is treated as just a topic that should be forgotten, or "swept under the rug".

It is estimated that 80% of the people who died of suicide, mentioned it to a friend or relative. Studies show that of the 80% of Americans who could be effectively treated, only 30% seek help.

What we need to shout to the world is "Depression" is a treatable illness!! These people CAN feel good again!! The rest of us need to become aware of what to look for, instead of dismissing things said as just "talk"!!

I have listed the following links to help us all have a better understanding of suicide and depression, and especially for those who are suffering depression, and feel there is no way out.
