But that only lasted though the 8th grade. I used to sing all the time...in the car, that is. Then my senior year of high school I tried out for choir, and made it. That is where my love affair with singing started.
I love singing so much, I decided that it was what I wanted to study in college. My major was Vocal Performance (which is, by the way, A LOT tougher than you think), and I have just 10 units to complete for my degree. Very close. And I have a 3.8 GPA. Not bad, eh?
I'm a mezzo soprano. Mezzo means "half," so I guess you could say I'm a half soprano. This just means that I'm not an alto, which is a low voice, and not a soprano, which is high. Although that's not true. I can sing just as high as most sopranos, but my comfortable range (called a person's tessitura) is lower than that of sopranos. Anyway...
I've been taking private voice lessons for 5 years now, and have learned a lot. My first teacher was Cherrie Hampton at Southern Nazarene University. My second was Lisa Ensinger at Point Loma Nazarene College. Both of them are fantastic teachers with different quite different teaching methods.
I have been in two operas...well actually, I've been in the same opera twice. I was in Amahl and the Night Visitors my freshman year of college, playing the role of the Page (which is actually a bass role that I sang up a octave). In the winter of 1996 I was in the opera again, this time as the Mother, which is a principle role. Very fun.
I've also been in several musicals...Fiddler on the Roof, Oklahoma!, and My Fair Lady. These I enjoy very much, but I'm not a very good dancer. It always takes me till opening night to learn the steps. Ugg. I have two left feet, what can I say?
If I could do anything, I would sing for a living. But unfortunately the music industry is extremely competitive, and I'm not overly ambitious. But, it would be nice.
