Trainings for Adoptive and Foster Parents
Iowa
Foster and Adoptive Parents Association (IFAPA) recognizes the ongoing needs of
adoptive parents and also of foster parents.
In an effort to meet these needs, IFAPA has scheduled trainings in every
region of Iowa in the coming months to address issues that parents are faced
with today. This is the current
training schedule, but more training sessions will be added in the Spring. Notification of additional training sessions
will be mailed to all adoptive and foster parents. For additional information, please call Julie Agena (IFAPA) at

All
trainings offered are free to any adoptive or foster parent in the state of
Iowa, though preference will be given to adoptive parents who enroll. Space is limited for each training, so
please respond early.
Speakers:
Holly
van Gulden “The Dance of Attachment”
As an adoptive parent, a member of an adoptive
family and a counselor, Holly van Gulden has experienced various adoption
issues. Her presentation discusses ways
to form healthy attachments with children, as well as living with angry
children. She discusses family systems
and ways to keep your family strong and healthy.
ARC
of Northland “Working with People Who Have FAS/FAE”
ARC will provide background information on Fetal
Alcohol Syndrome and Fetal Alcohol Effects.
They will discuss ongoing issues and train different techniques for
those parents working with FAS/FAE.
Bruce is a Des Moines-based therapist who
specializes in attachment disorders. He
sees many adopted and foster children in private practice, as well as providing
consultation services for agencies in the area. Bruce will be speaking on attachment disorders and issues for
adoptive/foster parents.
Pat
Crosley “Respecting Invisible
Differences”
Pat is a Family Advocate for Magellan Behavioral
Health, as well as an experienced foster and adoptive parent. Her presentation will discuss mental health
issues facing children today. She will
examine different parenting approaches as well as diversified learning needs of
children.
