Weiss

The Weiss Family

The Weiss Family name originated in Germany. The Weiss Family of Whitetop originates in the United States with the birth of Mathias Weiss, March 12, 1752 in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania to Moravian parents, who migrated to Winston-Salem, NC. Mathias, a weaver and dyer of fabric, was able to complete twelve yards of fabric a day, apparently a noteworthy production rate on the old looms. Mathias served in the Revolutionary War; and after the war, married Rachel Bonham Ball, daughter of Joseph P. Bonham and presumed to be a Wythe County war widow. After their marriage, they moved to Grayson County, building their log cabin home near Grant, where they lived for the remainder of their lives.
