Hello folks, I'm from Ottawa and my 8-year old Tasha (poodle) has just been diagnosed with diabetes (on Sept. 9/99). The most frustrating part of all this is that Tasha's bg count (14.49 mmol/ltr or 216 mg/ltr) is, according to our vet, still too low to begin insulin treatments because it may cause her to be hypoglycemic. So in the meantime, we're anxiously watching her like hawks for any changes. The scary part is not having a lot of information on this disease and how to best care for her. The Internet has been a source of comfort and at times, terror. I suppose once we get into the treatment rountine and testing, we'll become calmer because Tasha's depending on us. We won't let her down.

We have just lost our wonderful 'Josh' kitty at 17.5 years. He was diabetic for the last three years and we managed very well right until the end. The extra care is so easy to give to those special family members that share our lives. I would encourage anyone to not be afraid of caring for a diabetic animal, just be knowledgable and observant of their needs. Thank you for sites like this to help us along the road.
