Our History

This ministry was started by a group of clergy and lay-persons who believed that professional counseling by trained, Christian counselors has an important place in close relationship with the Church community.

In 1996, a need was identified for an affordable, accessible, and professional counseling ministry in Central New York. The Rev. J. Andrew McTyre began conversations with the community and soon proposed a counseling ministry supported by and based within the church community. A modest ad-hoc committee was established which began the work of creating a counseling ministry in the greater Syracuse area.

Today, the Oneida Counseling Ministry has an active committee that oversees this specialized ministry of the Oneida Association of the New York Conference, United Church of Christ. It boasts warm and sensitive therapists who provide counseling with integrity. It is also an ecumenical ministry, welcoming Member Churches from all denominations.
