Ancestors of David Francis Burrell


The earliest Burrell ancestor we know of is Walter Burrell, Sr. who was born in 1750. He married Mary ----- and they had three known children: 1) Hezekiah Burrell born in 1774 married Nancy -----; 2) Walter Burrell, Jr. born in 1775 married Pheobe Pruitt; 3) Jesse Burrell born in 1780 married Jane Pruitt. Two of the brothers followed a migratory path from Virginia to North Carolina down through South Carolina and then to Georgia. The descendants of the fourth brother, Walter Jr., populate today's Western North Carolina and Northeast Georgia counties.

Walter Burrell, Jr. was born in 1775 in Wadesboro, Anson Co., NC. He married Pheobe Pruitt, daughter of Michael and Elizabeth Bright Pruitt. They had several children, but these four we are certain of: 1) Bright Burrell born in 1797 married Elender Center; 2) Jessie W. Burrell born in 1805 married Mourning -----; 3) Matilda "Tildy" Burrell born in 1805 married Enos Hooper; 4) Mark Burrell born in 1806 married Huldah Denton.

Bright Burrell was born in 1797 in TN. He married Elender Center, daughter of Abner and Ellender Prewitt Center. This couple settled in Union Co., GA. It is probable that this couple had other children besides the ones listed below:

  1. Walter M. Burrell born March 21, 1818 in NC died April 6, 1909; married July 16, 1840 to Elizabeth Ann Denton (1824-1900), daughter of Jonathon and Agnes McConnell Denton
  2. Center Burrell born 1821 Buncombe Co., NC died 1900 Towns Co., GA; married Sarah Denton (1825-1913), daughter of Jonathon and Agnes McConnell Denton
  3. Mourning Burrell born about 1828 TN
  4. Marcus Burrell born about 1833 TN
  5. Miles Burrell born in 1835
  6. William Burrell born about 1837 Union Co., GA

Center Burrell and his wife, Sarah Denton, lived in the section of Union Co., GA that later became Towns County. It is unknown at this time exactly when they married. Their children:

  1. William Taylor Burrell born about 1847 Union Co., GA married Mary L. Maney
  2. James Center Burrell born about 1849 Union Co., GA died in Cherokee Co., NC; married 1) 1879 in Fannin Co., GA to Sarah Denton; 2) Mattie Allman
  3. Miles M. C. Burrell born about 1851 Union Co., GA married Sarah L. -----
  4. Thaddeus M. Burrell born December 31 1852 Towns Co., GA died January 23, 1943 Augusta, GA, buried at the Head of Tennessee Baptist Church in Dillard, Rabun Co., GA; married Nancy Marinda Carter (1848-1934)
  5. David Francis Burrell born July 31, 1854 Towns Co., GA died April 23, 1941 Towns Co., GA, buried in Commerce, Jackson Co., GA; married 1) January 6, 1884 to Louvenia Haseltine Corn (1862-1888), daughter of Solomon S. and Lydia Berrong Corn; 2) April 24, 1890 to Jane Berrong (1862-1912), daughter of Henry N. and Nancy E. Loyd Berrong
  6. Andrew Elijah Burrell born March 18, 1856 Towns Co., GA died March 15, 1947 Rabun Co., GA; married October 22, 1875 to Sarah Carter (1855-1931), daughter of Thomas W. and Catherine M. Pendergrass Carter
  7. Mary Drucilla Burrell born about 1857 Towns Co., GA married 1) James J. Coffee; 2) William Riley Cloer (1830-1913), son of Elijah B. and Sarah Howard Cloer
  8. Sarah A. Burrell born about 1859 Towns Co., GA
  9. Joseph M. Burrell born about 1861 Towns Co., GA
  10. Amanda A. Burrell born about 1863 Towns Co., GA died in Cherokee Co., NC; married James M. Garrett
  11. Jonathon S. Burrell born about 1865 Towns Co., GA
  12. Huldah C. Burrell born about 1868 Towns Co., GA

David Francis Burrell and his first wife, Louvenia Haseltine Corn, had two children:

  1. Leander Burrell born December 7, 1886 Towns Co., GA died August 14, 1942 Franklin, Macon Co., NC; married Texie Ann Cheek (1890-1924), daughter of Elisha and Lavina Holmes Cheek
  2. Lydia Ann Burrell born June 12, 1888 Towns Co., GA died August 12, 1939, buried in Commerce, Jackson Co., GA beside her father; married August 27, 1904 to Burgess Franklin Cheek (1887-1970), son of Elisha and Lavina Holmes Cheek

David remarried in 1890 to Jane Berrong and had the following children with her:

  1. Lillie Victoria Burrell born February 28, 1892 Towns Co., GA died May 12, 1981 Towns Co., GA; married James Tilmon Cheek, son of Elisha and Lavina Holmes Cheek
  2. Edgar D. Burrell born September 06, 1893 Towns Co., GA died August 16, 1981; never married
  3. Bessie L. Burrell born August 11, 1895 Towns Co., GA died December 08, 1918; married Pink Jones
  4. Georgia H. Burrell born May 30, 1897 Towns Co., GA died November 24, 1987; married Leon Meeler
  5. Mabell S. Burrell born May 10, 1899 Towns Co., GA died May 08, 1993; never married
  6. Joseph R. Burrell born December 15, 1903 Towns Co., GA died December 14, 1980; never married

Family legend has it that David Burrell and Elisha Cheek together owned a whole mountainside. David's land was on the Towns Co., GA side of the mountain and Elisha's on the Clay Co., NC side. This could be why their children intermarried so heavily. David later moved to Banks Co., GA and may have attended church in Commerce, where he's buried.
