DeLong Introduction

DELONG

3rd Generation

MICHAEL (5-1-6) b. 26 Nov 1739, Berks Co., PA (per t.s. as Delang); d. 26 Jan 1819. Wife Maria Barbara Bolle(n)bach was b. 18 Jul 1756; d. 18 Jan 1832; d/o John Abraham and Anna Margretha. Michael and Maria Barbara are buried Bowers Churchyard.

1760 - Sponsor for Anna Marg. (5-1-3-4)

1772 - Sponsor for Michael (5-2-2-3)

1774 - Michael and Maria were married by 1774.

1774 - Michael and Barbara sponsors for Sarah (5-1-4-6)

1776 - Michael & Maria were sponsors for s/o Adam and Maria Margretha Lippert on April 7.

1777 - March 23. Named on p. 28 of Maxitawny Church Account Book (MCA Book.)

1777 - 80 - Pvt. 5th Class, Capt. Casper Smeck's Fifth Company - Maxatawny, Berks Militia. (PA Archives 3:6, 302, 279.)

1778 - May 28. Took Oath of Allegiance (Book D, Vol. 1, p.55 at Library of Historical Society of Berks Co., PA)

1779 - Maxatawny tax list, 100 acres, 2 horses, 6 cows.

1780 - Maxatawny tax list, 100 acres, 2 horses, 4 cows, œ20.7.8.

1781 - Maxatawny tax list, 100 acres, 2 horses, 3 cows, œ4.

1782 - Sponsors for Jacob (5-1-5-5)

1784 - Maxatawny tax list, 100 acres, 2 horses,(?) cows, 5 sheep.

1785 - Maxatawny tax list, œ1.17.0.

1787 - Barbara DeLong named in the MCA Book.

1789 - Barbara DeLong named in the MCA Book.

1790 - Maxatawny census. Three of the males would be Abraham, Peter and Isaac, another is perhaps David if the census were not taken until after his birth May 6. The remaining male could be either Jacob of whom we know nothing after his baptism, or could be the male b. 1784-90 who appears as under 16 in 1800. There were four daughters in this census, so one of the five born prior to 1790 must have died by this date. Probably it was Maria; the name was used again in 1793.

1792 - Named on p. 38 of MCA Book July 28.

1793 - Named on p. 38 of MCA Book March 16.

1795 - p. 114 of MCA Book

1796 - Michael and Barbara were sponsors for a d/o Henry & Gertrude Grimm (Bowers Ch).

1796 - Named in MCA Book.

1800 - Maxatawny census. 23101/12101, as Michael Long. The boy over 16 would probably be Abraham who did not marry until that December. Perhaps Jacob was married, if he was living, as we do not account for him in the home. The girl over 16 would be Elizabeth. The boys between 10-16 would be Isaac, David and an unidentified male. NOTE: there was an unidentified male in 1790; if the same person, he might not be child of Michael as it would be difficult to squeeze another child into the 1784-90 period but perhaps another child might be fitted in as born early 1789. The girls between 10-16 would be Catherine and probably Susan, although the latter was actually already 17. The three children under 10 would be Michael, Daniel and the second Maria. This suggests Solomon died before he was five.

1805 - Sponsors for a s/o Jacob and Mariga Fenstermacher.

1806 - They were sponsors at Bowers for their granddaughter Elizabeth Neidlinger.

1810 - Maxatawny, 01301/10201, as Michael Long, living between his twin sons who appear as Delong. The boys between 16-26 would be Isaac, David and Michael. The girls would be Catherine and the second Maria. The son between 10-16 was Daniel. The girl under 10 is unknown; perhaps one of the adults was actually spouse to a child of Michael's, and the young girl Michael's granddaughter.

1812 - He (or M.Jr?) sponsor for Elias, s/o Abraham, co-sponsor was Cath. prob. (5-1-6-9.)

1814 - Sponsors for a s/o their son, David, Bowers Ch.

1818 - Perhaps she was the Maria who was sponsor for a s/o their son, David.

1819 - January 26. Michael died, age 79-2-0 per published inscription (of Bowers Tombstone inscriptions which has 26 Jan 1819. The age fits birth of 26 Nov 1739.) Not 26 Mar or 26 May as found elsewhere.

1819 - Will Berks Co. 8:216. Executives, sons, Abraham and Peter.

1820 - Maxatawny and Longswamp censuses fail to show widow, Barbara, but she must have had her own household as several children were still unmarried, and she was still a householder in 1830. Not likely Mrs. Long of Longswamp whose younger sons were still unmarried and very likely at home.

1820 - November. She was a sponsor in Bowers, for a d/o of their son, Peter.

1821 - March 3. Account of his estate $711.43, administrators were sons, Abraham and Peter (Orphans' Court Docket 7:441.)

1824 - Barbara was sponsor at Bowers for Esther, dau. Sam'l. & Eliz Neidlinger Landes. Eliz was d/o Barbara's dau. Eliz.

1825 - Barbara was a sponsor for s/o of her son, Michael.

1827 - Barbara was probably the sponsor for s/o her son, Daniel (Bowers).

1830 - Maxatawny. Barbara under 80 living with a female under 30, perhaps the unidentified girl under 10 in 1810. They are two houses from her son Isaac.

1832 - She died ae. 75 yr, 6 mo. as Delang. Her adm. Berks Co. 11:211, son Peter, administrator. Fourteen children are identified from baptisms. Lehigh Co. History omits Peter, Jacob, Catherine and Solomon; identifies Maria by nickname, Polly; includes a Gronan which was actually Maria's married name; includes Gideon who was actually a grandson.

Children:

*5-1-6-1 ABRAHAM b. 28 Jan 1777; md. 13 Dec 1800 to Esther Breyfogel.

*5-1-6-2 PETER, twin to Abraham, b. two days later; md. 1797 Barbara Reber.

5-1-6-3 MARGARET b. 5 Aug; bp. 30 Aug 1778; sponsors Adam and Margaret Libbert. Perhaps she married Philip Fenstermacher - See Misc. Sheet 13.

5-1-6-4 JACOB b. 29 Feb; bp. 26 Mar 1780; sponsors Maria Delong single (5-1-3-3?) and Jacob Bieber. He cannot with certainty be confirmed in 1790 census, was probably not in father's home in 1800. Perhaps he died young, although perhaps he could be the Jacob Long b. 1775-94 whose census entry appears in text for (5-1-5.)

5-1-6-5 ELIZABETH b. 16 Mar; bp. 16 Apr 1781; sponsor Christian Delong (5-1-5-2) and Elizabeth, last name Bauer-? in Bowers Ch. typescript (Hinke transcript) but given as Delong in an earlier unidentified reading; md. 28 Nov 1805 John Neidlinger (Ref:Hellfrich)

5-1-6-5-1 Elizabeth Neidlinger b. 1805; bp. 1806; sponsors Michael and Barbara; m. Samuel Landis (per B. Sell.)
5-1-6-5-2 Jonathon Neidlinger b. & bp. Bowers 1807. Sponsors John Klauser and Hannah Heidlinger.
5-1-6-5-3 Marianna Neidlinger b. 29 Oct 1812; bp. 25 Dec 1812; sponsors Peter (5-1-6-2) and w. Barbara.

5-1-6-6 SUSANNA b. 1 Sep; bp. 22 Sep 1782; spons. John & Susanna Schlonecker. d. 1 Apr 1852; bur. Christ Luth. Ch. (Hope), Dryville, Rockland Tp. Berks; md. Johan Adam Heist, b. 27 Aug 1773; d. 25 Mar 1845. Adam and Susanna were sponsors in 1823 at Bowers for a s/o Peter and Catharine Repper. Sell suggested Catharine was Susanna's sister. Adam and Susanna were sponsors in 1817 for a d/o Jacob and Barbara Kieler (Kiefer?). Adam and Susanna were sponsors in 1803 for d/o Peter (5-1-6-2).

5-1-6-6-1 Solomon Heist 1804
5-1-6-6-2 Sarah Heist 1807
5-1-6-6-3 Reuben Heist 1811
5-1-6-6-4 Reuben Heist (again) 1813
5-1-6-6-5 Nathan Heist 1816

*5-1-6-7 ISAAC b. 12 Jun; bp. 1 Aug, 1784; md. Catherine .

5-1-6-8 MARIA (as Mariga and not Margareta as has previously been reported) b. 22 Mar; bp. 23 Apr 1786; sponsors Fredk. Kieffer and Maria Hertzog or Hennsinger. She died before 1793 when another dau. was named Maria, and was perhaps deceased by time of 1790 census.

5-1-6-9 CATHERINE b. 10 Jan; bp. 28 Jan 1788; sp. Jacob and Catherine Dalritsch. Was she the Catherine, sponsor for d/o brother Abraham in 1812? Was she the Catherine, sponsor with Peter Volck (Bowers 1809) for 5 of Henry and Catherine Grobe (Peter Volch had w. Cath. then dau. Maria b. 16 Apr; bp. 26 May 1811 Bowers. Probably not Catherine DeLong.) Cath. DeLong and Daniel Klein sponsors at Bowers for s/o George and Sarah Klauser. Cath. DeLong sponsor at Bowers in 1812 for s/o Carl and Cath. Seidi-?. Cath. DeLong and Abr. Haug were sponsors in 1813 for s/o Polly Schack. [Bernice Sell (a Berks Co. PA genealogist some years ago) suggested that Cath. may have married Peter Repper with whom Cath. was sponsor in 1823 at baptism of s/o her sister Susanna.]

*5-1-6-10 DAVID b. 6 May; bp. 24 May 1790; md. Catherine Clauser.

*5-1-6-11 MICHAEL b. 4 Jan 1792; md. Rebecca Lobach.

5-1-6-12 MARIA (not Margareta as previously reported) b. 10 Nov; bp. 26 Nov 1793. Sponsor Maria Hensinger, single woman. She md. _________ Gronan, the Pa. German for Oct. 1903 identifies her as POLLY GRONAN.

5-1-6-13 SOLOMON b. 8 Oct; bp. 8 Nov 1795; spons. Jacob and Catherine Dallritsch. He is not accounted for in 1800 census, probably died young. Holleman (a late, I think, DeLong genealogist in Berks Co. area in his manuscript shows a Jesias b. 17 Aug 1826 [record] by John Herman) to Solomon & Cath. Does it belong here as he says? [You will note Solomon is not accounted for in the 1800 census and I'd suggested he might have died young.]

*5-1-6-14 DANIEL b. 18 Oct; bp. 17 Dec 1797; md. Elizabeth Delong, d/o Joseph (5-1-3-5.) Elizabeth was born 22 Oct 1798 a d/o Michael's cousin, Joseph, who was s/o Michael's uncle John.

NOTE: Lehigh Co. History says one of the daughters md. _____Reppert (cf Lippert? Libbert) Lehigh Co. History says another daughter md. ________Rauzahn. Mrs. Sell said a Benj. and Maria Rauenzahn appear in Dryville records.

What was the connection of SARAH DeLONG [or was she Sarah ( ) DeLong] to Michael (5-1-6)? She appears in the 1860 census of Longswamp Twp. within a string of seven households, the others all seemingly identifiable as descendants of Michael.

1. JESSE DELONG, known from several other spellings such as Josiah, Jessias, Esaias and Isaiah was Michael's grandson (5-1-6-14-2), s/o Daniel.

2. Peter Wile 44 and SARAH DELONG 42, the only persons in this household. A somewhat older Peter Wile had been husband of Elizabeth DeLong (5-1-6-2-3), granddaughter of Michael, d/o Peter. Elizabeth was born 1803.

3. PETER DELONG (5-1-6-11-4), s/o Michael Jr.

4. AARON (5-1-6-11-1), s/o Michael Jr.

5. MICHAEL (5-1-6-11) Michael Jr. himself.

6. ISAAC LONG. Despite the surname, the household and its ages fit Isaac (5-1-6-7,) s/o Michael.

7. JOEL DELONG (5-1-6-10-10), grandson of Michael, s/o David.
