PETER (Pyeter) (5-1) born probably Germany, bpt. perhaps 1707, see Sheet (5). settled first in Ulster Co., NY by 1724 but was likely unrelated to the much earlier Dutch family there. Must be the Peter Delon who had 100 acres land warranted 16 Jan 1737 in what was then Lancaster Co., PA (PA Archives III:24:391). His patent for 187 acres in then Philadelphia Co., and what is now Bowers Station, Berks Co., PA (Maxatawny Twp.) is dated 27 Jun 1738. Berks Co. was formed in 1752. He bought an additional 30 acres in Berks Co. on 30 Jan 1755 (as Peter Delangh; PA Archives ); this is further referred to in a land purchase of son, Henry, in 1761. Peter gave land on 8 Oct 1759 for the Evangelical Reformed Chuch, known as the Bowers, or DeLong, Church. Peter's will of 1 Dec 1756 was proved in Berks Co. on 17 May 1760. (Z:32) 185 acre farm. children: John, Henrich, Jacob over 14; Michael, Barbara, Abraham, Fredrick under 14.
Peter married in 1723 or 24 (but not as early as the 1722 often given) Eva Elizabeth Weber b. 1706-7. That they were married by 5 Aug 1724 is confirmed in the sale of Ulster Co. land by her parents, Jacob and Anna Elizabeth, to Zachariah Offman. The parents had left Germany by 1708.
In the London Documents for German Protestants in NY Lists dated 28 Jun 1708 are Jacob Weber 30, husbandman, wife Anna Elisabetha 25, daughters Eva Maria 5 and Eva Elisabetha 1. So Eva Elizabetha was about 17 at time of marriage. The Webers came to NY aboard the ship Globe 1709. Kocherthal Records shows their son Johan Herman was baptised at sea 14 Sep 1709. A fourth child, Johannes, was bpt. Quaissack Kill on 19 Apr 1710.
1725, 1728, 1730 - Children born in Ulster Co., NY, baptisms recorded in registers of NY City Lutheran Church.
1728 - Peter Long mentioned in a list of "The Freeholders of the High Lands," Ulster Co.
1729 - Eva Elizabeth, w/o Peter Langs was sponsor for bpt. 17th Sunday of Trinity at "quasayk kill" (Ulster Co.) of Eva Elizabeth, d/o Johann Jurge Mans (or Maus?) and wife Eva, recorded NY Luth. Ch.
1730-1 - Perhaps the family went to PA soon after the 7 Jun 1730 bpt. of son Johannes at Quassaik Kill. It is known Eva Elizabeth's parents moved at that time. On 23 Sep 1751 William and Margaret ward of Ulster deposed that Jacob Webbers removed to PA "Upwards of twenty years ago." [Documentry History of NY III:597.]
1737 - 100 acres of land warranted 16 Jan 1737 in Lancaster Co., PA.
1738 - Patent for 187 acres at Bowers Station, Berks Co., PA on 27 Jun 1738.
1742 - Probably the Peter DeLong who signed the Maxatawny Township petition presented to the Court of Quarter Sessions at Philadelphia on 4 Jun 1742.
1755 - Purchased 30 acres in Berks Co., PA as Peter Delangh on 30 Jan 1755.
1755 - Elizabeth DeLong was the sponsor for grandson, Johannes (5-1-3-1) on 29 Feb (sic) 1755. Widow is inked incorrectly onto the 1939 typing of Hinke's 1918 transcript.
1756 - Peter's will dated 1 Dec 1756.
1759 - On 6 Jan 1759 the will of Frederick Kieffer of Longswamp was proved by oath of Peter Delongh (Berks Co. Wills 1:56. )
1759 - Peter gave land on 8 Oct 1759 for the Evangelical Reformed Church, known as the Bowers or DeLong Church.
1760 - Peter's will was proved in Berks Co. on 17 May 1760.
1767 - She contributed to the fund to purchase a pulpit bible for the church.
1770 - Eva Elizabeth still living at the baptism of grandchild (5-1-3-8).
1770 - Church consistory met at Eva Elizabeth's home on 11 Apr 1770.
Children:
5-1-1 NEELTJE b. 24 Mar 1726; birth. recorded NY Lutheran Church (Ref: NYG&B Vol. ) Sponsors at bpt, no date, were Antony Preslar and Neeltje Quirk.
5-1-2 CATHERINA b. 18 Sep 1727; bp. 24 Jun 1728, recorded in NY Lutheran Church (Ref: NYG&B Vol. ?) Sponsors at bpt. were Ludewig Miller and Anna Marlena.
*5-1-3 JOHN b. 14 Apr 1730 in Ulster Co., NY per I.H. DeLong; bp. 7 Jun 1730, recorded NY Lutheran Church (NYG&B Vol. ) md. Maria Katherina Dussinger.
*5-1-4 HENRY b. 1733 or Nov 1732, probably NY state; md. first Margaretha Susanna ___________ and second Catherine __________.
*5-1-5 JACOB b. probably about 1736, probably in NY state; md. Anna Margarata ?-Bauersox.
*5-1-6 MICHAEL b. 26 Nov 1739, Berks Co., PA; md. Maria Barbara Bollenbach.
5-1-7 ABRAHAM b. 15 Nov 1747; md. Anna Maria _______, md. 12 years; d. 26 Nov 1778, age 31-0-11. Birth and death dates from t.s. as D. Lang. In 1774, Abraham and Anna Maria were sponsors for a son of Adam and Maria Marguerita Leibert. Perhaps they were the Abraham and Maria Lang who were sponsors for Abraham (5-1-6-1) in 1777. On 27 Sep 1778, they were sponsors for a son of John Nicholas and Anna Maria Bollenbach (Can his wife have been a Bollenbach?). His will names wife, Mary, and brother, Jacob. Will, Berks Co., 3:1, 1779. Exors. Mary DeLong and Frederick Housman; named on p. 28 of Maxatawny Acct. Book 23 Mar 1777. Under bro. Jacob's son Abr, we find he is mentioned in uncle Ab's will, but that has been lost here.
5-1-8 BARBARA md. perhaps Jacob Bush. Mrs. Sill says Jacob and Barbara appear later in Oley Hills (St. Joseph's) records, and they are mentioned in Henry's will. Is Henry 5-1-4 or Henry Bush?
*5-1-9 JOHANN FRIEDRICH, called FRIEDRICH (FREDERICK) b. 1750; md. Susanna Schmetterin.
ABRAHAM (5-2), resident of Lynn Twp. in today's Lehigh Co., PA, has long been considered brother of Peter (5-1) of adjacent Berks Co. It is known that Peter lived earlier in Ulster Co., NY and married into one of the Palatine families there. It has been shown on sheet (5) that Peter may well have been the Peter Le Lonn, son of Abraham Le Lonn (Le Long, Langer), another of the Palatines, baptised 1707. Abraham (5-2) then was perhaps another son. The Hunter lists of Palatines show that the older Abraham's household increased from one to two children between Oct 1710 and Jun 1711. Perhaps this denotes the birth of the younger Abraham. It would be important to know where the party lived at time of these lists -- Germany, England or NY. As will be noted below under 172(6?), the marriage banns for an Abraham, presumably (5-2) indicate he was born in Germany. There is no particular problem with Abraham marrying this young, Peter was likely only 16 or 17 at marriage as was his wife. But if Abraham were born after the family reached NY, might the banns be an intended remarriage of Abraham (5) whose baptism in Germany has been found?
172(6?) - His possible father Abraham Langer/Le Long was a Palatine to New York, and his probable brother Pyeter (5-1) lived in Ulster Co., NY before settling in PA. It is therefore likely he is the Abraham for whom marriage banns with Rachel Hornbeeck were published in Kingston, Ulster Co. 13 Mar 172(6?). He is notated as born Germany, she Rochester, Ulster Co. The marriage apparently never came about as the banns were deleted from the register (Ref: Hoe: Kingston Records.)
1730? - Nothing is known of birthdates for any of his children, so no date can be approximated for his marriage to Catherine ________ . It was perhaps about 1730.
17__ - He settled in Lynn Twp., Northampton, now Lehigh Co., PA.
1748 - 113.5 acres of land were surveyed by warrant date 16 Mar 1748. In 1870, it was resurveyed, by now in three parcels belonging to Koenigs, and recorded Allentown 11 Aug 1870. [Lehigh Co. Book __, p. 947, see attached photo.]
1755 thru 1759 - His will dated 21 Dec 1755, Lynn Twp., then Northampton Co. It mentions son Peter, other children indicated but not named. Wife "Catren" was executrix. Witnesses were John Eversett, Samuel Braun and Michael Baumgartner. Abraham's mark was a capital D. It was proved 22 Sep 1756, Braun being noted as Hannes Brown. The will was never recorded.
Louise Varisco has supplied photocopies of various documents which I assume are taken from Northampton Co. Estate file #113. The inventory of receipts for debts paid off by Catherine, opens with a puzzle - Receipt No. 1 is dated 11 Nov 1755, six weeks before Abraham's will was signed. The second receipt is dated 29 Apr 1756. We can conclude Abraham died between 21 Dec 1755 and the date of receipt No. 2, but I have no explanation for the date of No. 1. All other receipts appear to follow in chronological order with most being dated; No. 17 of the eighteen is 15 Oct 1759.
The inventory and evaluation of the estate is dated __ Mar 1759 (day illegible), and is entitled "The Pisment of Abaham deLong desesed Good and Chattels" (sic throughout). Pisment is spelled more correctly Prisment in the summary, no doubt appraisal, each individual item on the inventory being "Prised at" a given value.
The major item is the "Plantason", no doubt being the 113.5 acres of 1747, prised at £30.0.0. Some descriptive words are hard to read but seem to refer to twenty acres of water, perhaps lakes on the property. Next came the "Grate wagin" prised at £8. The only direct bequest of the will, the two year old mare colt, was to be given to Peter "directly" and does not appear on the inventory. The total appraisal was £81.3.7.
1764 - In a letter 27 Sep 1955 to Mrs. Jorgen Jacobson of Chicago, Prof. Irwin Hoch DeLong said that the date of the invoice and appraisement of the estate in File 113 is 1764. Perhaps this is the date on the outside of a document, undated in the text itself, which summarizes and supplements appraisal information and restates the debt receipt list. In this document the appraisal of £81.3.7 is repeated, then indicates the estate sold for £17.2.11 above the appraisment, for a total of £98.6.6 The plantation remained at £30 but unsold. The total of debts paid off by Catherine was £48.1.2 to the eighteen creditors.
Louise Varisco has submitted a document stating that on 2(1?) Apr 1764, Katherine Delong swore to the administration of the estate. Evaluation and dispersements are given as £128.6.6. This is £30 above the figure in the paragraph above, and shows that the unsold plantation, valued at £30, was not part of the appraisement of £98.6.6.
The estate was settled 3 Aug 1764. On this date, a release was given to Catherine DeLong by the children. The sons are listed first, then daughters with their husbands. The sons were Peter who marked with a capital D, Math. (sic), Abraham, John, Etward (sic). Daughters were Rachel, Madelena wife of Henry Bretnig, (Heinrich Bretnich), Hanna wife of Michael Engel (Englert), Catherine wife of Andrew (Andreas) Straub. This release document witnessed by George Briner, George Kistler, Philip Schuman and Daniel Straub. [Ref: Deed Book B, Vol. 1, pp. 375ff, as quoted by I. H. DeLong in his letter to Mrs. Jacobsen.] Release recorded 20 May 1772.
1765 - The Herring Genealogy says Catherine died in 1765. This may be valid, or perhaps it is just an inference from knowing she was still alive in 1764. Plow a Straight Furrow erroneously says she was deceased by the time of the 1764 completion of probate.
Children:
Now that we finally know the order of children as given in the estate settlement, they are being renumbered in our text, using the settlement order which Irwin H. DeLong in his 1955 letter presumes was the order of birth. This will allow us to discuss possible birth periods to some degree. Sons are given first, then daughters.
5-2-1 PETER estimated birth around 1733. He is the only child called by name in his father's 1755 will. Presumably the oldest son and perhaps the only son not a minor. Named in 1764 settlement. Nothing more is known of him. Perhaps he was the Peter, single in 1777 at baptism of Abraham (5-1-6-1). However, Peter (5-1-4-2) was a closer relative and thus a better candidate.
*5-2-2 MATHIAS/Matthew estimate born around 1735-37. He was listed second among males in 1764 settlement and was presumably second son. Md. 176_ Maria Margareta .
*5-2-3 ABRAHAM Jr. estimate born 1738-9. Listed third in 1764 and presumably third son. Still single in 1772, md. perhaps after 1775 .
*5-2-4 JOHN estimate born 1740-1. Named fourth in 1764 and probable fourth son. The 1830 census, if correctly identified, confirms birth in 1740 or after. This is questionable if he was truly father of presumed son Henry born 1757, though it is possible.
*5-2-5 EDWARD (ETWARD) born say late 1740s or even into 1750s. Named fifth in 1764 settlement and presumably fifth son. First known child born 1775. Md. Anna Maria Steidel.
5-2-6 RACHEL presumably oldest daughter, named in 1764 settlement and obviously unmarried at that time. In order to accomodate John as being old enought, though scarcely, to become a father in 1757, I have placed him and his three older brothers as born in the period from 1733 to 1741. As oldest daughter, she too is likely in this period or even earlier.
5-2-7 MAGDALENA (per IHDeL: Magdalena has been given elsewhere, and Herring Gene. has Mathelina), born roughtly 1740, named second among daughters in 1764 settlement, by which date she was wife of Henry Bretnig/Henrich Bretnich (per IHDeL; Brethnig has been given elsewhere and Herring Gene. has Bretheith.)
5-2-8 HANNA (sic) born probably well into the 1740s, named fourth among daughters in 1764 settlement by which date she was wife of Michael Engle/Englert (per IHDeL; Herring Gene. uses the latter.)
5-2-9 CATHERINE born probably well into the 1740s, named fourth among daughters in 1764 settlement by which date she was wife of Andrew/Andreas Straub (per IHDeL; Herring has Andres). A descendant is Louise Varisco, Strongsville, Ohio, 1992.
POSSIBLE SON, BUT HIGHLY QUESTIONABLE:
X-X-X JOHN LUCAS A son of this name has been attributed in print to Abraham, but he is not named in the 1764 estate settlement and I suggest he does not belong here. I suggest he was a Lang/Long. He is reported as John Lucas Lang at the baptism of son Philip Jacob born 5 Aug 1773; bp. 29 Aug 1773 at Allemaengel Lutheran Church, sponsors Philip and Barbara Brobst. (In a fairly new book of Berks Co births and bpts., Philip Jacob's father is shown not as John Lucas Long but as Johannes DeLong. And the church is identified as the Jeruselem "Red" Church in Albany Twp.) He is supposedly recorded as DeLang or DeLong at the 1768 baptism of John Jacob (5-2-2-2), also the same year at baptism of a son of Martin and Barbara Forsch. The original manuscript needs to be seen. (Allemaengel is, I have been told, a geographical area. Mrs. Sell said John Lucas appears in the records of the Jerusalem "Red" Church in Lehigh Co. 1/2 mile from Frieden's "White" church, and 3/4 mile from Lynn Twp. I assume, but could be wrong, that the former would be the Allemaengel Lutheran Church of Albany Twp.)
X-X-X-X PHILIP JACOB b. 1773, see text above.
POSSIBLE GRANDSON
X-X-X JONATHON. A Jonathon received Depreciation pay for service in the Continental Army in 1785, together with Abraham and John. The latter two were Abraham (5-2)'s sons of those names, or perhaps all three were grandsons (PA Archives V:4:317)
