James died 30 Jun 1888 in New Orleans, Orleans Parish, Louisiana, and was buried 1 Jul 1888 in New Orleans, Orleans Parish, Louisiana. He married Margaret Ann Agnes KEHOE about 1848. She was born about 1830 in St. Johns, New Brunswick, Canada, the daughter of Timothy KEHOE and Bridget GALLEGHER. She was the oldest of nine children. Margaret died 31 Mar 1893 in New Orleans, Orleans Parish, Louisiana, and was buried 1 Apr 1893 in New Orleans, Orleans Parish, Louisiana. Both are buried at St. Patrick's Cemetery #2 in New Orleans.

NOTES for James follow:

  • 1833 - In April St. Patrick's church in New Orleans was dedicated; it was not finished until 1851. This was the first "Irish Church" in the city. Prior to this, the Irish attended St. Louis Cathedral or one of the three chapels, the Ursuline Convent in the Latin Creole section, St. Antoine's Mortuary Chapel on N. Rampart or Pierre Foucher's private chapel on Delord near Tchoupitoulas..
  • 1834 - A James Keaton lived at 86 Union. (City directory)
  • 1838 - The only Keating listed as living in N.O. was Ann B.
  • 1839 - No City Directory available for 1839 - 1840)
  • 1840 - The census for N.O. lists a James Keating with 3 males between 20-30.
  • 1840 - Michl Keating born 2 Apr 1840 (presumably in N.O.) s/o M. and Bridget Keating, d. 10 Apr 1840 aged 8 days. Inscription on t.s. in St. Patrick's Cem. #2.
  • 1841 - New Orleans City Directory, 2nd Municipality: James Keating bricklayer, 87 Union.
  • 1842 - New Orleans City Directory, 2nd Municipality: James Keating bricklayer, 87 Union St.
  • 1842 - Purchased with Cornelius Collins property in Gretna and #2 in square 29 of Fanbourg Livanduis in Jefferson Parish measuring fifty feet on Jersey thus between Ninth and Washington for $3060. This is the first positive i.d. of James in New Orleans; he later sold this property and his wife M.A.A.Keating renouced her rights.
  • 1843 - City Directory: James Keating, Philippe n. Gravier.
  • 1843 - A James Keating was granted citizenship on 30 Jun 1843 at the Circuit Court Eastern District of the State of Louisiana. George McGillway and Patrick Conroy were witnesses. This James Keating would have been in the US for at least five years.
  • 1844 - Brother Nicholas Keating b. in Wexford, Ireland, died in N.O. on 10 Aug 1843.

  • 1847 - purchased on 26 Jan 1847 for $700 a lot in Fanbourg Religienses in Parish of Jefferson in Square #5 known as Buck Yard Square within Apollo, Bacchus, Felicity and St. Andrews sts.   • 1847 - James Keating sold on 22 Apr 1847 lot #2 on a plan square bounded by Jersey, Washington, Chippewa and 6th St. in Fanbourg Lwandars (?) for $235 [Book 7, p. 249 - Transcripts from Book #14 of the Parish of Jefferson -City of Lafayette. Notary J. B. Marks & T. Guyol] Renunciation by M.A.A. Keating. Original plan dated 5 Mar 1832.
  • 1850/1 - St. Alphonsus Church was dedicated in the City of Lafayette on the edge of the Garden District.
  • 1850 - Listed as living in City of Lafayette, Jefferson Parish, LA on 18 Nov 1850. Jas Keeting 30 b. Ire, Marg 24 b. NY, Jas 5, John 2, Ellen Casy 18 and David Keeting 6/12. Occupation as carpenter with real estate valued at $10,000. Ellen Casy age 18 was born in Ireland; the census does not give her occupation; she may have been a domestic.
  • 1850, 1851, 1852 - New Orleans City Directory: James Keating, Carpenter, Apollo b. Felicity & St. Andrews.
  • 1851 - purchased a lot of ground with all improvements on 27 May 1851 in Nuns Fanbourg, Parish of Jefferson in square bounded by Nayades, Apollo (later called Carondolet), St. Mary and St.Andrew sts. as #45 on a plan #101 for $800. Paid $300 cash balance furnished 2 promissory notes for $250 each with 6% interest. Notary T. Guyol. [Book 11 Transcripts from Book Letter B of Parish of Jefferson, City of Lafayette.
  • 1853 - purchased lot #44 with all improvements on 26 Mar 1853 in square bounded by Nayades, Apollo, St. Mary & St. Andrew sts, for $825. Notary = T. O. Stark.
  • 1854 - Purchased 2 July 1854 a Lot No. 52 in Block No. 14 of Saint Patrick's Cemetery Number Two in New Orleans. Deed is recorded in the names of James and his brother Michael Keating. On the back wall of the tomb is a panel from an older tomb with inscriptions for the children of M. and Bridget Keating. The earliest date is for Mich Keating d. 10 Apr 1840. Also an inscription that reads, "In memory of my brother Nicholas Keating a native of county Wexford, Ireland died Aug 10th 1843 aged 33 years. These burials all predate the purchase of the lot at St. Patrick's so their burials must have been elsewhere.

  • 1855 - Purchased property for $1100 bounded by Bacchus, Terpsichore, Apollo and Euterpe sts. in suburb Annuniciation in 1st District. Paid with 2 notes for $550 each dated 31 Mar 1855 payable to Bank of Louisiana at 6% interest. Notary John T. Coffey, Book 68, p. 53 of Record Conveyance Office.
  • 1856 - Purchased a slave named Melissa age about 14 for $900 on 9 Jun 1856. [Civil Court Book 70, p. 180]
  • 1857 - 3 Feb 1857 purchased a lot with buildings in 4th Distrit in square bounded by Carondelet (formerly Apollo) St. Mary, Nayades and St. Andrew sts. for $4213.58. [Book 70, p. 534] Notary = Th. Guyol.
  • 1858 - On 9 Jun 1858 signed a contract with John Hobson to construct a "a 1 story attic house, kitchen, etc. with cistern" for $2050. Notary, M. Gernon.
  • 1858 - Sold property on 11 Oct 1858 that he purchased from the succession of Elisha Crocker on 24 Jul 1858.
  • 1859 - Purchased 11 lots for $1486 in square bounded by St. George, Jacobs, 1st and 2nd, Lots #5-15 on 26 May 1859 [Book 80, p. 96]

  • 1864 - Document in Keating files: "This is to certify that James Keating did, on the 18 February 1864 take and subscribe the oath prescribed by the president's Proclamation of December 8th 1863, and that the same is registered in this office for permanent preservaton, bearing the number 23. Signed F.B. Vinot, Clerk. Clerk's Office U.S. Circuit Court, Sixth Circuit, Eastern District of Louisiana.
  • 1865 - Civil War Tax in LA: Jas. Keating, Tenth Representative District, Parish of Orleans ...Block 238 $12.05; Block 238 $8.28; Block 240 $3.77; Block 240 $1.51. In August 1861, Congress levied a "direct tax" on each state. Louisiana's share of this tax was $385,886.66. Taxable categories were "...all lands and lots of ground, with their improvements and dwellinghouses..." ("The Civil War Tax in Louisiana: 1865. Based on Direct Tax Assessments of Louisianians." LA; Joseph 15, b. LA; Emma 11, b. LA; Nicholaus 4, b. LA; Mary Meaghan age 33 b. Ireland, domestic Serv., Real Estate $10000, Personal $1000. [NA Roll 524, p. 24/368b Line 25, dwelling 135, family 160] The census taker garbled a lot here. This record was found by finding neighbors listed on the above mentioned Civil War Tax list of 1864/5.
  • 1880 - Census taken 1 Jun 1880 James 60 b. Ire. of parents both born in Ireland; Margaret 40 b. NY of NY born parents; Emma 16 and Nicholas 14. Also Maria Williams, black age 35, b. Tenn.; Henry Williams, black age 18, b. LA, and Alice Williams, black age 7, b. LA all listed as servants.
  • 1884 - City Directory: carpenter, ss. Euterpe, bet. Carondelet and Baronne, r. 470 Carondelet.
  • 1885/1887 - New Orleans City Directory: James Keating, Builder, 470 Carondelot.
  • 1888 - Died 30 Jun 1888, age 74. Death certificate says he died of organic disease of heart. He was living at the corner of St. Mary and Carondelet Sts. in N.O. (St. Mary is one block west of Felicity.)
  • 1889 - On 3 May 1889, Margaret A. A. Kehoe pledged to donate $500 to have a memorial window installed in St. Alphonsus Church in N.O.

    OBIT: The Daily Picayune, New Orleans, LA, 1 Jul 1888, pg. 4: After a career notable alike for its industry and integrity, James Keating, an honored resident of the Fourth District, passed away last evening.

    Mr. Keating was born in Wexford, Ireland, seventy-four years ago, and coming to New Orleans a young man, settled in the Fourth District, where he resided for nearly fifty years. Some time ago Mr. Keating withdrew from active business to enjoy the rest to which his labors had entitled him. He was respected by all who enjoyed the good fortune of his acquaintance, and was known to all as a staunch friend of everything that tended to the right, as he understood it, in politics, society and religion.

    Mr. Keating leaves a widow, two sons and a daughter to mourn his loss, the latter now residing with her husband in British Honduras. The funeral ceremonies will take place this evening at 4:30 o'clock.

  • TO DO: Check passenger lists for NYC before 1842 for James Keating or brothers. Check 1840 census for James or one of the brothers in NYC. Call LOC about "New York Truth Teller" newspaper for the 1840s. Check church records for St. Patricks Church before 1854. TRADITION: Betty Keating Mitchell claimed her great-grandfather Keating was a cotton broker. She also claimed the original spelling of Keating was KEATINGE (English) and that the Keatinge Family was well known in England for several centuries as manufacturers of pesticides and rat killers to halt the plague.
  • QUESTIONS: When did the Keating brothers, James, Michael & Nicholas, arrive in New Orleans? Did they come directly from Wexford, Ireland or elsewheres to New Orleans? Did they travel together? The answer may be in New York City records, since the obits for Nicholas and a child of Michael's each said, "The New York Truth Teller will please copy."
  • On 8 Dec 1863, Lincoln promised pardon to all Confederates who would take a prescribed oath excepting of course, certain high officials and generals. James Keating signed this oath 18 Feb 1864. (Original in Keating file.)
