OBIT: Red Bank Register; Red Bank, NJ, Wednesday, April 29, 1891. JOSEPH W. LONGSTREET died at his home at Oceanic last Saturday morning. He was one of the oldest and most respected citizens of Oceanic, having lived there over fifty years. He was born in January, 1813, and was in his 79th year. He had been ailing for some time with a complication of diseases and the grip set in about two weeks ago. His system was too weak to withstand the attack and he gradually failed. Mr. Longstreet had been road overseer of the Oceanic district for a great many years, he having previously engaged in farming. He was an honest man, a good neighbor and an upright citizen, and will be missed in the community. He leaves a widow and seven children. The funeral services were held on Monday at one o'clock from the house and half-past one from the Oceanic Presbyterian church. Rev. S.W. Knipe conducted the ceremony, his text being "The hoary head is a crown of glory, if it be found in the way of righteousness." The funeral was the largest ever held in Oceanic. The pallbearers were Dr. Ehrick Parmley, Smith Conover, James Whitmore, John Jeffrey, William Bruce, Sr., and William Emery. The interment took place in Evergreen cemetery, Rumson.
