Alfred Thomas RICKS, b 19 Mar 1844 in Zanesville, Logan Co., Ohio. Served in the Civil War in Co. E of the 17th Ohio Infantry. Married Mary Jane TERRY, 13 Dec 1868. Lived in Indiana, Michigan, Kansas, and finally in Oklahoma. Died 9 May 1918; buried in Grant Co., OK. Children: Harry Ward RICKS, William Elbert RICKS, Warren Delbert RICKS, Owen Earl RICKS, James Dow RICKS, Maud May RICKS, John Elmer Sylvanus RICKS. I am looking for any information on Alfred's parents or siblings. Family stories say they originally came from Virginia.

RICKS, Elizabeth, born 11 June 1783; m. Jesse HENDERSON in Greensboro, N.C., 30 Nov. 1809. William Henderson was the bondsman. Elizabeth was the d. of Jonas RICKS, of Guliford Co., N.C. Elizabeths siblings were Edward, Hannah, Nancy, John, Thomas, Jonas, and Gwin RICKS. Known child: Hannah3 Henderson, born _____; married Jasper Wilson Kersey, son of Ezra Kersey and Mary Odell, 14 October 1836; witnesses were Henry Kersey and M. Mendenhall.

Hannah RICKS, born 23 February 1771; married Thomas BALDWIN, John Walter and Rob. Johnson bondsmen. Springfield MM abstracts record a Hannah Baldwin (former Ricks) condemned for her marriage out of unity 2 January 1796, and with a certificate granted to Westfield MM 2 September 1797. These records are the only known clues to the possible movement of this Baldwin family. Several Guilford County families are found in Westfield MM records during this period, and while there is a Baldwin among them, there was no mention of a Baldwin with wife named Hannah. Daughter of Jonas Ricks.

Lydia RICKS, born ______; married Annuel LANE. Their family appears on page 75 of the 1840 Preble County, Ohio, census, living next to Lydia Ricks, of Guilford Co. In her family census, there was 1 male child under 5, 1 male 20-29 (Annuel); 1 female under 5, one female 5-9, and 1 female 20-29 (Lydia). This family moved to Henry Co., Ind., before 1850.

Absalom RICKS, born about 1815; married Susannah COOPER 2 January 1839 in Randolph County, N. C. Son of John Berry RICKS, of Randolph and Guilford County. Absalom's widow lived in Adams County, Ill., in 1850. Evidently, Absalom had died by that year. There were male children.

Philemon (Phillip) RICKS (Benjamin), was born after 1738; married Elizabeth Chappell, daughter of James Chappell, Sr. of Sussex Co., Va., whose will was probated 17 May 1770. Phillip was a militia officer during the Revolutionary War. He moved to Lunenburg Co., Va., and later settled in Mecklenburg Co. Children: (a) James Ricks, (b) Thomas Ricks, and (c) Benjamin Ricks; perhaps others. Desire contact with descendants who have knowledge of this family.

Thomas RICKS (Benjamin3, John2, Richard1), was born probably in Prince George Co., Va., before 1734; was administrator of his fathers nuncaputive will in 1754; married (1) Lucy ?; married (2) Sarah ?; died in Granville Co., N. C., 12 October 1802. Mentioned Elizabeth HESTER in his will. His son, John Ricks, and Phillip Bishop inventoried the estate and reported their findings to the May 1803 Court. Desire contact with descendants who have knowledge of this family.

The following are children of Nathan2 Ricks and his wife Eliza Williams, of Tishomingo Co., Miss. Nathan lived in Iuka, Miss., and he was a successful steam mill operator. He disappeared from Tishomingo Co. after 1870. One of his descendants reported that he had moved to Texas. Elizabeth was the daughter of Thomas Williams. Nathan was the son of John1 and Rachel Ricks, of Autauga Co., Ala.:

[Note: Nathan served during the Civil War with the 11th Alabama Calvary, Company I. His brother-in-law John D. Williams served with Company K, same regiment.]. New information: Nathan took his family to Tarrant County, Texas, by 1880. He is later found in Swisher County, Texas.

Reuben J.4 RICKS (John3, Edward2, Jonas1), was born about 1828 in Alabama, possibly Marion Co.; married (1) Racheal Jane COLEMAN 11 June 1856, born 1835 in Alabama; married (2) Elizabeth GOOCH, 30 Nov 1869, born about 1849 in Mississippi. Ruben first appeared in family records as a witness to the sale of DeKalb Co., Ala., land from his brother Ransom to John Gilliland in 1848. Ruben next appeared on Leah Ricks' marriage bond as the surety guarantor when Leah and Gilbert Bolen married in Tishomingo Co., Miss., 28 January 1858. Reuben enlisted and served in the Civil War, and he lived in Prentiss Co. during the 1870 census. His family does not appear on the 1880 census for Prentiss and Tishomingo Counties.

Sarah L.5 RICKS (Ransom4, John3, Edward2, Jonas1), born about 1846 in Ala., married A. E. Green 10 November 1871, in Prentiss Co., Miss. Their bondsman was William F. Rider, husband of Sarahs sister Martha. A. E. Green also appeared on the marriage bond for his brother-in-law, James E. Ricks, in 1872. A. E. and Sarah later lived in Monroe Co., Miss., where they purchased a 25 acre farm located 5 miles south of Nettleton and six miles west of Amory. They farmed the land for two years and then sold it to Harvey P.5 RICKS. There was not another record of this family in Monroe County after. 6 January 1885. Children of A. E. Green and Sarah L.5 RICKS: Unknown.

Harvey P.5 RICKS (Ransom4, John3, Edward2, Jonas1), was born about 1858 in Tishomingo Co., Miss. He married (1) Leanna ROGERS 23 March 1880 in Monroe Co., Miss., just before the census period. They were the parents of one known son, Carl RICKS, and probably a daughter named Annie May RICKS, who married Needham H. YOUNG in Monroe Co. 26 January 1897. Harvey married (2) Maggie YOUNG 19 November 1888, and lived in Monroe Co.

James died 19 December 1943, and Mary Kate died 13 June 1953, both in Oklahoma City, Ok.

  • v. Ralph Marion Ricks, born 6 February 1912 in Tonkawa; died 8 February 1912.

James Wiley Ricks, b. 22 March 1830, in Tenn.; married 18 Oct. 1871, Mary Ann Sorrells; (James) died at Red Rock, Texas, in 1902. Mary Ann died at Ganado, Texas.

Their children were:
