The Harris Family

    I am searching for the parents and other relatives of Joel HARRIS, born about 1819 in TN. or IL. Joel died before 1910 in Enterprise, (or Enterprize) Texas. He married Melinda C. GOFF before 1857, they probably married in Missouri (unknown county), as several of their children were born in Missouri, others were born in Arkansas. It is possible that Joel Harris had previously been married, because he was 38 years old when he married Melinda.

    Melinda (Goff) Harris was born circa 1840 in Missouri, and died after 1910 in Okla. She was last listed on the 1910 Washita, OK. Census, and was living in the household of her son, Oliver Altus Harris.

    Joel and Melinda (Goff) Harris were listed on the 1880 Van Buren, AR. Census, with the following children; William, Rebecca, Colvin (or Calvin), Benjamin, Alvis, Charles and Oliver Altus Harris. Another daughter, Martha who married David Blackburn and lived in Yell County, AR.

    Around the turn of the century, Joel Harris and family moved to either TX. or OK. Territory. In January 1903, his son, Oliver applied for a marriage license in Gainesville, Cooke Co., Texas, the next day he was married to my grandmother, Ivy Earle Bugg in Burneyville, Indian Territory, Okla. They married at the home of Martin Harris. (maybe an uncle or cousin?)

   By the year 1919, Oliver Harris and family were living in Standing Rock, OK., where they owned a grocery store. Later, they permanently settled in Atoka Co., OK. Oliver died in 1930.  Ivy remarried, Joe Clark.
