Introduction

The Piedmont Georgia Roots page traces the ancestors of four individuals born in Heard and Spalding Counties during the late 19th-century. Each descended from settlers who migrated across Georgia's Piedmont region during the period of Georgia's rapid westward expansion between the 1805 and 1827 Land Lotteries (see my chronology of Piedmont county creation). In all cases, these Georgia families descended from individuals who immigrated to Georgia from other states shortly after the American Revolution, arriving between the 1780s and 1830.

Consequently, the family pages relating to each ancestral line may be accessed through two indices below. The main pedigree index begins with the four individuals noted above, working backward through their parents, grandparents, and other ancestors. Major ancestral surnames in this section are linked to their first appearance in the ancestry of each individual. For those working forward in time from other states, the immigrant index begins with the earliest individual in each ancestral line to immigrate to Georgia; these entries are organized by their state of origin to facilitate searches from researchers tracking families in other states (look for the state flags).

Some family pages also contain links to photographs, including scans of a few old family photos, as well as present-day headstones, homesites, or other places of interest in the lives of families or individuals. In addition, some pages contain full transcripts of original documents such as military and estate records. Finally, where possible, I have scanned images of original signatures for inclusion on the appropriate family pages.

As is the case with most genealogical research, the information assembled on this page represents a combination of primary documentary evidence I have gathered from original records and microfilm copies or printed transcriptions of such records, and information gleaned from secondary sources such as published genealogical works (both in printed and electronic formats). Where the information on any given page relies heavily on such secondary sources, I will post bibliographic citations or hotlinks to web sites and online GEDCOM files at the foot of that page.

My primary purpose in maintaining this homepage is to share the results of my own genealogical search, and to establish connections with other researchers working at either end of these or collateral lines. The contents of this page will be updated as new information is obtained, and I encourage anyone with corrections or additions to these or collateral lines to contact me at the email address below. In any case, however, I encourage all visitors to sign my Guestbook.
