Dear Classmates:

Our 45th class reunion was a huge success. It was a busy weekend. Friday night 70 of us congregated into the Sports Bar at Shilo Inn for a fun time. There were lots of laughs and lots of puzzlement. We decided to wing it without name tags. Some were recognizable, but most of us had to ask to whom we were face to face.

Saturday night 140 entered the hall where the freshmen/sophomore and junior/senior walks and senior bench were duplicated. The drinking fountain and sun dial were part of the scene all thanks to Ruth Moak Spillar. Ron Poole had constructed a large pelican that welcomed all, as well as the face of Cookie Carlson on the body of WC Fields. Lots of pictures from the past (some going back to the first grade) of various classmates and events were there for much enjoyment. The evening was MC’d by Ann Wolfrum Rinehart.

We all had fun visiting (we had name tags), a great meal catered by Ruth and Bud Spillar’s restaurant, prizes were given for various things, then more visiting and a little dancing. The buffet was eaten from long tables covered with white tablecloths, accented with large red over covers and red cloth napkins. Each table had alternating red and white gift bags which held vases of red and white carnations. These were taken home by whomever found silver tape under their chair. Glen Shellito and Cliff Ambers contributed great ideas the last months and helped set up for Saturday night.

The main door prize of a bottle of Blue Moon riesling and two wine glasses was won by Judy Clark Berry. A second door prize of a mug depicting Oregon went to Glen Shellito. A guest of Ruth Alexander Prock, Chuck Whittemore, won a wooden golf sign for the lowest golf score. I think we meant to say the highest score, meaning the booby prize, but that’s what some of us know about golf (meaning me)!! The following won Oregon key chains -- prize for traveling the furthest was split by David Neeley from Australia and Tom Premo from Viet Nam/California, Roger Morrow for living in the most states (10) and 7 countries, Carol Bousman Dixon for having the most great grandchildren (4)! Two prizes, insulated Oregon mugs, were given for best dancers, a male and a female, not dancing together. Those went to Jim Craig and Roberta Wade Nichols who were dancing with their spouses, Lorri and Art. Prizes were purchased by Carol Dingman Mills.

The treasury was getting low, so the committee decided to hold a raffle. A large red basket full of Oregon products was won by Audrey Varnum Sinner. That boosted our treasury to $300 after bills were paid. Hopefully someone will come up with more money making ideas for our 50th reunion five years from now. If anyone has any great ideas, please let me know. That reminds me, please fill out those idea sheets and get them back to me before they get lost.

A picnic at Wiard Park was enjoyed by 70 of us. There was food galore and more visiting and more picture taking. Richard Pastega put together a memorial book, each page depicting classmates that have passed on, with photographs by Terri Borgen Dippel. Richard has asked that anyone who has an obituary or can recall the date of the passing of one of our classmates or teachers to please send him a copy to include in the book. The committee decided to have their wrap-up meeting bringing to a close the months of preparation for this successful reunion. We were joined by Joan Meador Rauch who had some ideas of possible get togethers before the next reunion, such as camp outs, cruises, etc. Since our class pictures are no longer hanging in the main hall at KU and were destroyed, some have expressed a desire to replace those photos. We will more than likely enlarge the photos from the annual, replace the frames, and present them AGAIN. If you’re interested in this project, Florence DeRosier Clarey with backup from Richard Pastega are who you contact. At the same time of the enlarging, small copies will be made to use for name tags in 2004 and maybe another directory.

Your classmate, Bonnie Sparks Robeson

The following poem was written by Sharon Holston Hargrove:

From ‘54 to ‘99 That’s forty five this year. Time has flown, our kids are grown The grandkids too, pert near. Some of us have caught that star Found success in every venture. Some of us have lost it all As we chased life’s grand adventure.

We’ve climbed the pathway to the stars, Faced uncertainties and fears, Our days oft filled with laughter Our nights beplagued with tears... Some of us have slipped away, Our work on earth is done, Absent, yes, in body, But in memory, we are one.

Those of us who gathered there, The Class of ‘54 Klamath Union High School, The alma mater we adore....
