Alex is my "baby". I got him at 11 weeks. He is fawn & white and now 7 yrs. old. Serena is my female. I inherited her from my daughter, who could no longer keep her. She is 8 yrs. and brindle & white. Our cocker is 0 yrs. and belonged to my husband before I met him. We have only had Serena for 3 years. She confounds the boys most of the time. Likes Alex, but only tolerates the cocker. My husband and I take the dogs everywhere with us....even on our honeymoon. I re lly love the breed and can't say enough wonderful things about them. Especially my baby boy, who is the most well balanced dog I have ever owned. I love your web site...hope to come back soon. |

As they are such "heat seaking missiles" I would assume this is not uncommon in older whippets. |

All of my dogs are special and important to me but my Whippet, Lady, is my baby and now my old girl. She actually "rescued" me when she came into my life at 12 weeks of age. We've been almost inseperable in the 13 years since. Although she is the smallest of our 4 dogs there is no doubt who reigns in this household. I am also very moved by the f iendship she has developed with one of our other pups, a rescued golden retriever mix. He is her caretaker and protector. I got my original bitch from Bill Turpin (Of Course) kennels in Aldergrove b.c. I ended up with 7 of them, who can only have just 1! I have no email but my mailing adress is Box 1081 Garibaldi Highlands, B.C. Canada VON 1T0. The Standard Poodle is not a rescue dog I bought her, the sheperd x pitbull was very mistreated and we got her at the age of 10 months, she had a litter at 6 months and the guy who got her wanted a "guard" dog, so she was staked out in the back forty somewhere and left to her own devices. She is finally getting to be a great girl and is such a sweetheart most of the time, she is still deathly afraid of "big" men so I can only assume that she was owned by one before, we got her from the Miss on Animal Rescue in Mission B.C. Sept 30, 1997. The kitten was found in a watersoaked box under a porch in N. Vancouver. She was about 3 weeks old and her little eyes were glued shut and her nose was plugged up too. Poor wee thing, she fit in the palm of y hand, now she is 5 months old and a growing conern, she will be spayed in May, the two dogs are already spayed. My neighbour has whippets and when I need a Whippet "fix" I go and see her and her 3 whippets. I will answer any and all letters sent to me o please feel free to write. My gal is just a year old and is a beautiful fawn colour. My parents used to breed and show whippets when I was a child, and I l ved all the routine of running aroung to the dog shows, seeing all the dogs and helping to show them the odd time. Best of all was the many litters of puppies we had around all the time. It was hard to let them go, but nice to see them with loving parents Now after 25 years without them, I have finally purchased my own whippet and I am so happy that I have her. She is a member of the family, and makes that well known as she takes over the most comfortable chairs in the house, and her favorite spot curled p by me when I sit down or at bed time, down under the covers curled up at my legs. I have had so many people ask me about her and love her gentle loving nature. Whippets are 'thee' best, and I hope I am never without one again. They make fabulous family ets, and loving, faithful companions and I would recommend them to anyone who really loves a dedicated dog. I have been pleasantly surprised at the numerous whippet sites on the internet and am enjoying them all, but so far I am having trouble finding very many from Canada, especially in Ontario. Margery Glickman - 09/06/98 20:56:22 My Email:Margeryg@adelphia.net Where do you live?: Miami | Comments: Hi, I recently visited Alaska and found that the Iditarod Dog Sled Race has led to the proliferation of husky dog kennels in Alaska. In these kennels, many dogs are treated very cruelly. The dogs in the kennels are not boarders; all of them are owned by the kennels. Many kennels have over 100 dogs. None of the kennels is inspected or supervised by the State of Alaska. In many of these kennels, dogs spend their entire lives outside tethered to metal chains as short as four feet long. They are never given the opportunity to run free even in a confined area. For your information, the chaining of dogs is prohibited when th y are governed under federal law. Many of these dogs drink water from hard-to-reach rusty cans that are bolted to their doghouses and are rarely cleaned or disinfected. Injured and old, arthritic dogs are kept outside in the winter when the average daily minimum temperatures range from -24 to 15 degrees Fahrenheit. It is painful for these dogs to be in the intense cold. Some dogs are never bathed, and nothing is done to help them cool off no matter how hot it gets. The only shade they get is inside their dirty doghouse, or under their doghouse if they are lucky enough to have one that's raised off the ground. Some kennels have few employees, so that each dog gets little attention. These dogs are unhappy prisoners with no chance of parole. The sponsors of the Iditarod have a responsibility to help insure that the dogs in the race come from kennels where they are humanely treated. I proposed to Mr. Stan Hooley, Executive Director, of the Iditarod Trail Committee, Inc. and to the non Alask n sponsors of the race that inspection teams be created composed of independent veterinarians (who neither work for kennel owners nor own a kennel) who, together with animal welfare people, inspect each participating kennel to make sure that basic animal elfare standards are met. The standards should be established by animal welfare groups. Dogs from kennels that fail to meet these standards would not be allowed to race. Please help the dogs. It would be wonderful if you would publicize their plight. And, it would be wonderful if you would encourage people to write to or petition companies that sponsor the Iditarod, as well as those that sponsor mushers telling them to support my proposal or a proposal that you might have along these lines. Th re has been much discussion about the Iditarod, but there has been no publicity about inhumane kennel conditions. Please let me know if you need more information. I have kennel pictures. These dogs should not spend their entire lives tethered to five foot chains which prevent them from having normal social interactions. These dogs should not be forced to drink from rusty hard-to-reach water cans that are rarely cleaned, or to live in substandard shelters in unshaded areas. These conditions and others under which they live are appalling and must be hanged. The dogs deserve basic humane treatment. Please let the Iditarod Trail Committee know that you support the creation of inspection teams composed of independent veterinarians (who neither work for kennel owners nor own a kennel) who, together with animal welfare people, inspect each participat ng kennel to make sure that basic animal welfare standards are met. All 3 of our pooches were rescues of one sort or another and we are looking for friends and companions for Webby and o rselves. We are in So. CA.
