History of Wrestling:

The History of the Sport of Wrestling

Wrestling: 'The world's oldest and the world's greatest sport', as Ed Oliverti states prior to each session at the annual NCAA Wrestling Tournament, is the sport that has existed on this earth longer than any other. Wrestling is the only sport specifically mentioned in the Bible (Genesis). In that passage, the most famous wrestling match between God and Jacob is detailed. Wrestling is also mentioned in the Old Testament (2nd Book of Samuel), where Abner says to Job: "The young boys should stand up and play (struggle/wrestle) before us."

Many encyclopedias define wrestling as "a struggle between two individuals endowed with strength, dexterity, and endurance, which ranks it among the sports of capital importance,' or as 'a struggle hand to hand with an opponent in an attempt to throw or force him to the ground, without striking blows."

Historically, wrestling has a universally recognized thesis: wrestling is as old as the first two-legged man; struggling with no weapon, struggling for survival and self-defense. Wrestling has been practiced by all peoples in all historical times, with the aim of developing fitness for physical and psychological effort.

Wrestling became closely linked with the customs prevailing in given societies, and their interest in preparing their male population for war, and developing their abilities to meet the vital requirements of daily living. The social values of wrestling acquired paramount importance, as one of the major levers helping individuals and society at large to survive and develop.

Competitive wrestling in many countries of the world is accepted as the highest achievement in secular evolution of wrestling. Wrestling is a natural sport, with weight categories, providing an opportunity for all men and women, regardless of their size and weight, to try their abilities on an equal footing (basis). Scientists and pedagogues had a high opinion of wrestling for the purpose of physical education (Plato, Aristotle, etc.). Many outstanding personalities have practiced wrestling for health reasons or in order to develop physical strength and the strength of will (Socrates, Plato, Abraham Lincoln, etc.).

Wrestling was an established sport among the Native-Americans in the 15th and 16th Centuries. Individual styles varied from tribe to tribe. Longfellow's 'Hiawatha' lives of native-Americans. In the English Colonies, wrestling was a popular sport at social gatherings. In the 18th Century, wrestling mellowed to a legitimate spectator sport. It was the major physical contact sport among men of all classes.

The sport of wrestling has produced many of the USA's outstanding individuals in a variety of endeavors, ranging from government and military leaders, to business, science, and the humanities. Some of the notable individuals include:
