Car Security

What can you do to safeguard your car? There are so many alarms and security devices on the market it is mind boggling. If you were ever in the market, you would know what I am talking about. I will not go into choice of security alarms, because there are so many, I wouldn't know which is better than the other. I will on the other hand tell you what to do and how to prevent theft. These tips will not exclude theft, but will certainly deter it.

There is nothing worse than going to your car and finding out it has been stolen or broken into. You get that sinking feeling and say to yourself, now what do I do. The first thing to do is call the police of coarse. Be prepared to answer questions they ask you. Give them the make, model, color, licence number, VIN ( Vehicle Identification Number. You will find this on your registration card ) and year of the car. Give the possible time it was stolen, and the phone number/numbers you can be reached. They in return will put this information on a national hot sheet and a APB ( All Points Bulletin ) will also be broadcast. The faster you call the police, the faster the police have to recover your vehicle.

Here's a list of tips to deter theft.

* Always lock your car, no matter where you are. Theft can happen anytime of the day, anywhere. Even if your in your own driveway, lock your doors. If you have a garage, lock the garage door and your car doors as well. Always keep your windows closed. Don't make it easy for someone to gain access to your vehicle.
* Park in well lighted areas. A thief does not want to be seen. By parking under a light, this will cause the potential thief to look elsewhere first.
* Install a burglar alarm. I said I would not tell you what one to buy, but it is best to have one installed.
* Don't put the alarm decal on the car. Unlike home security, it easier to disarm a car alarm. By advertising you have a car alarm, you are telling them you have one. Car alarms are to scare away the thief, thus preventing them from stealing it. If you advertise they will know what to look for.
* Never ever leave your car running unattended. In the winter it's always nice to warm your car up in some parts of the country, because it's so cold. If you must do that, lock your car doors and have a spare key for when you are ready to depart. On the other hand it's always nice to keep the car running if your only going to be away from the car for a minute. Never leave the car running if your going in the house for a minute, and don't forget your keys. It only takes a second for someone to jump in your car and take off.
* Never leave a spare key in your car. As it is convenient for you, it's just that convenient for the thief.,br> * Don't put identification on your key ring. If you ever loose them or have them stolen, the person can gain access to your car or house.
* Don't leave packages in view. Remove all items in your car such as purse, personal items, wallet, tools, clothing, etc. The hottest item on the market today is cellular phones. If your cellular phone is stolen, contact the mobile carrier you are hooked up with and have them cancel the service with them right away. I heard of cases in which the phone bill was run up to thousands of dollars before the service was discontinued. If someone walks by your car and sees something they wouldn't mind having, they will not hesitate to break into it and take what used to yours. There is so many thefts from autos it's unreal. From the 1996 FBI files it is a known fact that there is theft from autos every 6 seconds in the USA. There is a auto theft every 13 seconds. Put that into perspective, and you don't have a chance if your not guarding against it.
* Never leave anything in your car with your address on it. If the person has your keys, they will know where you live and could break into your house.
* Never ever keep your licence and/or registration in the car. If your car is ever stolen, you will not have the necessary information for the police. Also, if the police ever stop the person, the could use your registration and say it was borrowed with the owners consent. The police run a check on all vehicles, but if it was not reported stolen they will get away.
* Never hide a extra set of keys in your car. As it is convenient for you, it is just as convenient for the thief.
