Door Locks

Take a good look at your home in the evening (dark) hours. Make mental notes on which accessible areas are dark (not lighted). Are there any obstacles near windows where someone can climb up on them to gain entrance? Is your front or rear door solid, or does it have windows in them?

If you have darkened areas where someone can gain access, install lights. Preferably motion sensor lights, as these will save on electric, and scare the tar out of someone lurking in that area. If you have any obstacles in front of windows, remove them. Ladders should be stored away and locked up. Install deadbolts in your exterior doors. If you have a door with a window in it, install a double cylinder deadbolt. If you have a solid door (no windows) you can get away with a single cylinder, unless you have a window next to the door. When purchasing these locks (any hardware store) ask the salesman for a 2 and 3/4" THROW for the backset. This means the bolt it self will go into the door jamb 1". This will prevent someone from breaking out the door jamb and will not be able to gain access.

Remember, burglars do not like to be seen. That's why it is essential to keep lights on, whether your at home or not.
