Christian Travel Destinations

For how long shall thy journey be? and when wilt thou return?
Nehemiah 2: 6

This page is an attempt to list some of many Christian travel destinations in the U.S.

Please, gentle reader, if you know of someplace not listed below, drop me a line. It need not have a website: I can type up a file myself.

Please drive defensively.

Iowa & Nebraska

1. Visit

The Grotto of the Redemption.

Located near West Bend, Iowa, it is the largest grotto of this type in the world. It represents the largest collection of minerals and petrification concentrated in any one spot - in the world.

.

.

2. Visit

The Amana Colonies.

Located in eastern Iowa, these communal towns were essentially unchanged for 89 years, one of the longest lasting communal societies in the world. All land and buildings were owned by the community; families were assigned living quarters, and each person over school age worked at assigned tasks in the kitchens, fields, factories or shops.

Eastern Iowa (Festina & Davenport) also claims two "smallest church" candidates.
While you're in Iowa, you might like to visit The Bridges of Madison County or perhaps the Great Lakes of Iowa.

.

3. Visit

Boy's Town.

Located at 137th and West Dodge Rd. Omaha Nebraska, the late Father Flanagan's world-famous "City of Little Men," is an incorporated village on a 1,300 acre site located in West Omaha.

The Boys Town Hall of History chronicles the achievements and struggles of the organization. Among the other facilities open to the public are the Father Flanagan Historic House and Shrine, a Visitors' Center, Chambers Nativity Chapel and a gift shop.

While in Omaha, you may like to visit Nebraska's most popular attraction, The Henry Doorly Zoo, but leave a whole day for it. The Omaha Golden Spikes Triple A team plays right next door.
The Joslyn Art Museum houses an extensive collection of paintings and sculpture from antiquity to the present.
Here, you can check out Omaha youself.

West of Omaha, you can explore The Bohemian Alps.

4. Visit

Pilgrim Holiness Church.

This hay bale church dates from 1928 and is located in Arthur, Nebraska.

South of Arthur is Keystone, home of "The Little Church", where, from 1908 to 1929, Catholics and Protestants both worshiped (the last Lutheran service was held in 1949). Separate altars were built at each end and pew backs swiveled up and over for the respective congregation.

.

While you're in the panhandle, you might also like to visit Ash Hollow State Historical Park where visitors can glimpse a bit of geology, paleontology, history of early man, and the story of the great pioneer trek west or Fort Robinson Park near Crawford.
Also in the area is Carhenge, near Alliance, and furthur east, The Niobrara river.
Nobody canoes the Niobrara anymore, it's too crowded. Back in the 70s we would have Smith Falls all to ourselves. Maybe if you put in at Cody and got out at Nenzel you could avoid the press; just go early and take your raingear.
