L'viv Timeline:

star 1256 - L'viv, current capital city of Lvivska Oblast was founded. It soon became an important commercial center.

star 1340 - Captured by the Poles, and remained under Polish rule until the late 1700's.

star 1772 - Passed to Austria and became the capital of the province of Galicia.

star 1914-1918 - Bitter fighting took place in and around the city during World War II.

star 1919 - Annexed by Poland

star 1939 - During World War II L'viv was seized by Soviet Troops.

star 1941-1944 - German Army Occupation

star 1945 - Became part of the Ukrainian SSR, it was ceded by Poland to the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics, during this time the city was named L'vov.

star 1991 - Ukraine became independent, the city's name of L'viv was restored.

 

The city of L'viv is an important transportation and industrial center, major manufacturers include motor vehicles, agricultural machinery, textiles, chemicals, electronic equipment and processed food. It is the seat of Roman Catholic, Ukrainian Orthodox and American Orthodox archbishops. There are two churches that date back to the 14th century. The population is roughly 798,000.
