Goals of Friends of Fred

To encourage responsible spaying and neutering of cats and dogs.

To promote and sponsor adoption of shelter and stray pets.

To sponsor education related to care, health, and ownership of pets.

To provide emergency veterinary care (service is subject to available finances).

History

Established in 1993, Friends of Fred is a group of Searsport District Middle School students who work to raise money for spaying, neutering, adoptions, and emergency veterinary bills.

Students learn about appropriate care for their pets and help to provide educational materials to others. They also share common interests about their pets.

Students work to collect food and other needed materials for the local animal shelter.

Funds are raised through a variety of activities such as a yearly Valentine lollipop sale, food sales, top dog contest, work-a-thon, raffles, crafts, and donations.

The group is a recipient of WLBZ Channel 2's 1996 America's Future Award for Community Service.

Fred

FredFred, the inspiration and mascot for Friends of Fred, was a fawn English Mastiff adopted by Ed and Norreen Fernands in 1992. He was a beloved friend and companion who greeted everyone he met and loved to clown to make people laugh. He won the Waldo Independent photo contest for "Most Unusual" in 1998 eating a zucchini.

Fred loved to visit school and mooch treats from the students, and he enjoyed hosting the ice cream and cake parties he sponsored.

Fred died Septemeber 7th, 1998 after a long illness.
