What can we do against abandonment?

There are some rules that can help to defeat straying:

• CHOOSE CAREFULLY your dog: size, temperament, special requirement, manteinance cost... get as much information as you can, before taking him: you can't "change" your dog, if your choice was wrong!
• Before to take a dog, be sure that you know someone who can take care of him, if needed (i.e. who is giving you the dog). If you go on holiday, remember that many hotels accept dogs, and that dog-sitting is not so expensive! You can also ask someone to take care of your dog while you are on holiday, then you'll do the same for him.
• SPAY/NEUTER your pets, and tell everybody to do the same: your pet won't accidentally mate, and he/she won't suffer (if we take away hormones, pets don't look anymore for a "partner", and they care more for other things like food and games; their behavior let us understand that they are happy).
• TATTOO or put a microchip to your pet, and tell everybody to do the same.
• If you'd like to breed your dog, be sure to find owners for the puppies BEFORE the breeding. There are many dogs looking for a pet home in shelters and human societies, so advise who wants a pet to look there first.
• Give the puppies vaccinated, tattooed and spayed/neutered.
• If you find a stray dog, tell it to an animalist association, your vet, a shelter: they will help you.
• Animalist associations organize many manifestations, follow them and offer your help: it will be precious!
• Sensitize people to the problem of abandonment. Many people believe in commonplaces and need someone to explane them the truth:
• it's false that every bitch must procreate at least once: it doesn't solve problems like false pregnancies,
• you can't generate a purebreed dog simply mating your dog to a similar one, but with vague origin,
• it's false that a male dog suffers if he don't mate at least once, on the contrary he suffers more if he can just do one or two leaps.
• Convince shopkeepers not to show puppies in the window: people buy them for their tenderness, and get rid of them when they need cares.

• 70% of abandoned dogs die for hunger and car accidents. Many of these accidents cause wounds and deaths of humans too.
• Many abandoned dogs are used for dog combats and vivisection.
• In Netherland the rate of stray dogs is about 2%; in Italy about 15% (it rises to 35,7% in Abruzzo!); in Portugal about 30%.

  Ricorda: la legge n.473/93 dice: "chiunque abbandona animali domestici e' punito con l'ammenda da lire duemilioni a lire diecimilioni" ma questi fuorilegge rimangono impuniti se nessuno li denuncia. Per sporgere denuncia bisogna essere stati testimoni diretti del fatto ed aver raccolto qualche dato (es. targa della macchina che ha scaricato l'animale). Ci si puo' quindi rivolgere all'autorita' di Polizia Giudiziaria competente (comando dei Carabinieri o di Polizia), oppure scrivere un esposto indirizzato alla Procura della Repubblica, presso la Pretura.
