Important Facts

Puerto Rico is the little island in yellow.

This is San Felipe del Morro

Built in 1539 to protect the island from enemies and pirates.  Puerto Rico meant more to the Spaniards than gold an sugar.. It became known as the "Key to the West Indies" Puerto Rico guarded other Spanish land to the west and the south.  Spain built forts on Puerto Rico. Spanish soldiers came to run the forts. This huge fort still stands in San Juan.
