First Annual
Jeep Jamboree in Moab, Utah
TRIP REPORT

October 29 and 30, 1999

It's a Jeep thing...
you wouldn't understand

Joan and I just got back from our Marvelous Adventure in Moab, Utah. We have been planning this trip for over a year and it was absolutely great. Our Jeep is a 1998 TJ, 5 speed, 4.0L, dual top, Chili Pepper Red, 2" suspension lift and BFG 31 x 10.5 AT's.

This is the Lions Back. We didn't do this -- we aren't completely crazy ! The Lions Back is a narrow 65 degree rise of "slick rock." Driving on slick rock is kind of like driving on sand paper but who would want to drive on sand paper at 65 degrees ?!! Not only that but you have to turn around at the top -- how ? I don't know.

As one might expect Joan was always checking our progress on the maps. I think she is beginning to see my need for a GPS unit (hint, hint). Yes, I did notice that there are only men "assisting" her with her map...

The jamboree was divided into two days -- our first day was on the Kane Creek Trail. It was rated 6-7 on a scale of 10. There were some major challenges but our Jeep took them in stride. Here you see three of our fellow Jeepers doing the "whoop-ti-do's."

On the second day we did the Gold Bar Rim. It was rated 6-7 also but I think it was more a 7-8 !! There were many more challenging opportunities to test our Jeep and it came through every time. Notice that our right rear wheel is off the ground. You get a strange feeling as you climb down off a "slick rock" ledge onto your Jeep's nose.

Every time we looked out our rear view mirrors we saw a different variety of Jeeps. It took us three days to get to Moab and two to get home but I'd do it again in an instant !! Maybe next year...
