ECE arrives in Ontario

Updated December 30, 1998

Three years ago a virus that rapidly spreads throughout the ferret community started cropping up in various locations throughout the United States. Unfortunately, this virus known as ECE has now worked its way north into Ontario.

Epizootic Catarrhal Enteritis (ECE) is now being described as a virus that attacks the intestinal lining affecting a ferret's ability to absorb nutrients into its system. ECE is commonly known as the "Green Slime Disease" due to the fact that in most cases the first symptom is the sudden onset of bright green diarrhea.

It is with great sorrow that I post this picture, of a loving shelter ferret named Oso. It is with his unfortunate passing over The Rainbow Bridge that we were able to confirm that ECE has arrived. Thanks to Oso, we have been alerted…. Now we must arm ourselves with knowledge about this disease.

To help with this quest I have assembled the following links to existing web pages. As we continue to learn, this site will continue to change. All contributions to this knowledge quest are appreciated, please mail me: Paige Townsend
