The History Of Ibizans and Strangedays
Gerogl~1.gif (3802 bytes)
It is believed that the Ibizan's origins date back at least 5,000 years, making
it one of the oldest pure bred dogs in existence today.
They were often
 the theme
of Egyptian art. During the 8th and 9th centuries, the Phoenicians
brought this breed to the Balearic Islands, located off the coast of Spain.
They remained there, unspoiled for two thousand years. They were bred as
 "rabbit dogs"
with farmers only keeping the keenest and strongest hunters
to help feed the farmer's families. Ibizans have been known to "bring down"
much bigger game including deer.
It was first introduced into the U.S. in
  1956
by Colonel and Mrs. Consuelo Seone of Bristol, Rhode Island.
Bristol is an historic New England town and just a fifteen minute drive from
our home in Tiverton. They whelped the first American litter of Ibizans in
November of that year. We were fortunate to actually visit  with Mrs. Seone
at her summer home in Bristol in the early 1980's.

Susan first became interested in Ibizans in 1975, when the breed was still scarce
and being shown in Rare Breed Matches. They did not become an AKC
registered breed until January of 1979. Her first dog was Ch. Palmas Cazador
De Ben Gazi, "Dorito," one of the early Ibizan champions and a dear and loving
dog who died in 1989 at the age of 12. He won many group placements
and Best of Breed at Westminster KC in 1981. He was followed by his son,
Ch. Sun King Strangedays Reno who gathered 10 group placements and
Best of Breed at Westminster in 1984. Since those early days, we have owned
or bred over 30 champion Ibizans, (many of who were group placing).

We currently have 2 of them (2 wire coats). The wires,
always part of the AKC standard, are beginning to be more popular.
We think they look more "exotic" than smooths and we used to specialize in that coat.
