Editor’s Notes
A great feeling is to
get to this point when we can finish up a issue of Loose
Branches and Roots and get it ready for the printers. I always enjoy
looking at the materials for each issue and deciding what to use and what to
put in to a future issue. Each issue has a every name
index to help every one searching for what has been done. I many times spend
lots of time looking to see what has been done and where the corrections need
to be credited to.
Several weeks ago I
received a very interesting query, regarding a Finnell
man who was born in New York City and the Family Tradition was that the mans
Grand Father had southern roots.
Sounded interesting and I started out with a quick search of the Indexes
and found no reference to any of the names suggested. The individual was born
in 1911 in Brooklyn as I started with a search of the Brooklyn New York Census
for 1910. Finding the Family here was great as it helped to solve the Family
Puzzle. The alleged grandfather with southern ties was the Father in law living
with the Family. Hew was born in South Carolina as where his parents. All the
others in the household was born in New York. The
Family Tradition was right it was just credited to the wrong side of the
Family. There will be a good article on this Family as we finish some
additional research.
Always welcomed are
more additions and corrections to entries in these pages and past issues. There
is always interest in including the children of Finnell
women, as they marry and take on a new surname they soon become lost. Any and
all information on these line are always welcomed. The
collection of materials continues and I have received several other queries
that have resulted in new information and details.
I hope that we can
continue to collect and
share these old Family Obituaries. They many times contain
valuable information and clues that can be of interest to many people. I am
still looking for some more old Family Photographs that can be used in future.
The ones in this issue are I hope fun for every one. Pictures like this help to
give us a look into the life of these Finnell
Cousins. All these items are important to save and preserve.
I have in the past
heard and read references to several Finnell quotes
in the book The Little Shepherd of Kingdom Come, by John Fox, Jr. This
Novel published first in 1903 and reprinted in 1987 with a forward by Wade
Hall. this is a novel by Fox about the Civil War in
Kentucky and when first published in 1903 became a immediate bestseller. The
interest is the reference to the Finnell Family
connection to the War in Kentucky. A greta
story that would give every one a good insight on the this time period and how
our Ancestors may have reacted to this American Crisis. I had heard of this
book many time and was able to stumble across a copy
at a used book sale here in Minnesota.
I have also noted that
the H. H. Finnell Collection has been donated
to Special Collection and university Archives, Oklahoma State University at
Stillwater, OK. Henry Howard Finnell (1894 - 1960) collection contains over 2.5 linar feet of material including research findings,
Correspondence, publication sand photographs. Mr Finnell was known as "The Watchdog of the Dust
Bowl" in the eleven great plains states. It is
great to know that this collection has been preserved and family members have helped in saving
this valuable collection or a Finnell's life
work. It sure does not take much to
discover how many Cousins there are that have left some foot prints in the
History of our country
I hope that you will have a good summer
and time to enjoy some good Finnell Family
Hunting. I always enjoy hearing for
every one during the year and hearing about your finds. Best Wishes

In a letter from Karen Bidleman
dated in 1981 is some interesting information.
"I received a
letter from C.W.Gelle of Greenfield, Indiana that
states he has family letters that refer to FINNELLs
in Hancock County. The letters indicate the Finnells
came from Boone Co, Kentucky. A letter dated 6 Jan 1853 refers to a A.G. FINNEL
who had lived in Greenfield and had returned temporarly
to Boone Co.A letter dated 26 Dec 1851 from Finnell in Hancock CO to some one in Boone Co. Letter dated
29 Jan 1856 indicated
Finnells A.G., and Family were ill and in Boone Co
but planning to move back to Hoosier for
winter. An auction record on 23 Oct
1855, a J.S. Finnell purchased a reaphook. 25 Dec
1856 A.G. Finnell gave a note to John Fry. A auction of 26 Dec 1859 J.S. Finnell
bought flooring and A.G.Finnell something for 20
Cents"
It would be great fun to find these original letter and have copies for the Archives
files. Letters like these can be very valuable clues and some time even proofs
like there are needed for a good Genealogy.

APPLICATION for Aid to
Virginia Wounded or Maimed during the last War
VIRGINIA
In the County Court of
Roanoke County October 19 1885
Upon the application of
BENJAMIN F. FINNELL for aid under an act of the General Assembly,
approved February 25, 1884......
The Court having
carefully considered the written application of the said BENJAMIN F. FINNELL
verified by his oath and the evidence addressed in support of said application,
is of opinion that the said BENJAMIN F. FINNELL is entitled to aid under said
act and directs the said applicantion and all
evidence in this case be certified to the Auditor of Public Accounts.
APPLICATION
I, BENJAMIN F.FINNELL of the County of Roanoke
and state of Virginia, being a application for communtation...... I was a soldier in the Confederate
States Army, as a member of Company G (Neo Beckley, Captain), Derricks
Battalion Echels Brigade and was in & with the
said command when wounded or injured, that I received my injury on the __ day
of September 1864, about four miles east of Winchester, VA.
My injury consists in a
rupture as shown by the sworn statement of Dr A.Z. Koisen,
which rupture was produced as follows. Our forces were being driven back when
our command was taken to the support of one of our battalions which was in a
dangerous position and in our effort to save the battery a number of us were
captured by Federal Troops as we were hurried off, our troops opened up a heavy
fire on the enemy and the federal cavalryman whose prisoner I was forced me to
seize the front of his saddle so that I could keep up with the rapidily with which he was going running in this way, the
horse jumped over a large ditch carrying me with him, with such force that as
my feet came to the ground, I was by the great jar I received Very badly
ruptured. I told the soldier that I was ruined and could not go further, but being still under the
fire of our troops he slowed his speed, and I holding to his horse got some
three or four hundred yards further into the woods where I lay for two hours or
more. Since then I have been in constant & great suffer and while I am
poor, have to work some for my bread yet I am unable to labor except at times
and then with pain and difficulty. I have been all the while and am now a
resident of the state of Virginia, and have not received from the state of
Virginia or from the United States and commtalion
money or pension.
BENJAMIN F. FINNELL
At Roanoke County Court October term 1885
F. M. FINNELL being swarn in open court, says that he is the brother of B.F.
FINNELL was in the same Company with him in the Army Company G. Derricks Batalion 23 Virginia Cavalry. Was not in
the battle near Winchester when his brother was captured. His brother
was not ruptured before that time. Saw him a short time before he was captured
and he was not ruptured then saw him soon after he came home from prison and he
was ruptured

COUSIN
CONNECTIONS
This is the next
installment of Cousin Connection as abstracted form the old query sheets in
Harry L. Keller's papers and others collected at later dates. The importance of
this is the fact that the information supplied here was what these individuals
know about the family at the time. Some times there were clues and additional
materials that has been helpful in the Finnel History.
Several of these are interesting as later generations have contacted me
with little knowledge of the their family and I have
been able to supply them with copies of these query sheets. Any suggestions on furthering this project
would be welcomed.

A Chronology of the Finnells in Virginia
Compiled by
Mr. & Mrs. Merlin C. Finnell
Date Dec 1977
Old Rappahannock
County, Virginia was established in 1656 from the
upper
part of Lancaster County established 1651 from Northumberland, Old
Rappahannock included pasts of Westmoreland,
King George, Caroline, Spott‑
sylvania,
and Stafford, and all of Essex and Richmond Counties, It was
completely
abolished as a county in 1692, Early
records of this county tell
of
William and Bridgett Moss whose daughter, Frances married JOHN FENNELL,
This would appear to me to be the JOHN FENNELL
born 1629 who came to Virginia
22 May 1650, Page 190 of Patent Book No. 2
reprinted in the book "Cavaliers
and
Pioneers" by Nugent tells of Mr. James Williamson receiving land for the
transportation
of 23 persons to Virginia one of whom was JOHN FENNELL, A
Rappahannock deed of 20 October 1664A records the transfer
of 50 acres of
land
from William and Bridgett Moss to JOHN & FRANCES FENNELL...land that
adjoins
this same Mr. James Williamson. James Williamson was a man of property
and
a Justice of the old Rappahannock Court, who resided at Cobban
Park near
Warsaw, Williamson had a daughter, Margaret,
who married William Ball of
Lancaster County, an ancestor of George
Washington, This
would verify the
tradition
from Merlin's father that our Finnells were neighbors
of the ancestors
of
George Washington.
Although we lack
definite proof, it has always seemed to me most logical
that
this JOHN & FRANCES FENNELL must surely be the ancestors of those who
later
resided in Orange and Culpeper Counties,
Keeping in mind that rivers and watercourses
were the easiest avenues of
travel
for the early pioneer, trace the Rappahannock
River on the map to its
sources, Its branches and tributaries bearing names
such as Hapidan, Mountain
Run, Robinson River and many more are also
recorded in the descriptions of
land
purchases made by the later Finnells in Orange and Culpeper Deed Books,
Names in old Rappahannock records such as
Newman, Downer and Taliaferro,
to
list only a few, are the same surnames as those appearing as neighbors of
the
Finnells in Orange and Culpeper
at a later date, Colonial migrations
inland
involved large groups of persons, Many
families remained neighbors for
years,
after traveling together and often intermarrying as children came of
courting
age.
As we do more research
we find we have accumulated many more pages of
Finaell
data and more Finnell names, Each year we are able to sort a few
more
into some semblance of a family pattern, slowly
learning which child
belongs
to which parents, Many we will probably
never be sure of.
Now I am beginning the
task of sorting Finnell history chronologically,
setting
down the most important events and noting when a new individual appears
on
the scene, In this manner it is at least
possible to separate the generations,
if
not always the individuals, First I will
list the earliest records that seem
to
indicate to me the descent of the Orange and Culpeper
family from the JOHN
and
FRANCES FINNELL of early Rappahannock,
As this is only a Brief outline
all
verification of record sources are in my later Finnell
book.

There seem to have been
three adult male Finnells in the early Orange
County records, During the first nineteen years after
the county's formation
there
are many records regarding William, John and Jonathan Finnell. John and
Jonathan are
sometimes given the last name of Finny in the old records. By 1753
the
next generation begins to make their appearance in the books, The following
are
a few of the first concerning William, John and Jonathan Finnell.
16 Mar 1735....John Finney purchased of John
Taliaferro 100 acres on South west
Mountain

sold this same 100 acres 38 yrs. later to Hay

deed he is listed as John FINNELL and
his

100 acres lying in a
fork of the Rapidan River by Thomas Downer's
line
and by Robert Cave's Road. He owned this land for
15
years
and when he sold it in 1753 it was located in Parish of
Brumfield, Culpeper County due to the formation of Culpeper
from
Orange County, When the land was
sold he is recorded as Jonathan
Finnell
and his wife was Mary.
15 Nov 1761.. Date of
the will of Charles Hansford of the Parish of St.
Thomas and County of
Orange, planter, being sick and weak,
"Unto my well
beloved sister Anne Finell the wife of Thos

Negro girl Esther and
at her decease equally divided among
all
the children of my sister Anne Finnell
24 June 1762...Elijah Finnel
was appointed constable in Orange County 28 Oct
same
year he was paid 207 pounds of tobacco payment for viewing
the
tobacco fields. In colonial times many
Acts of Assembly
were
passed regulating its culture. Salaries
of ministers
and
civil officers, also all fines were paid in tobacco
Parishes were known by
the kind of quality gown there and
the
economy of that community was in proportion to the sweetness
of
its tobacco, Viewers were sent forth to
actually
count
the number of plants on the farms of the growers. An
interesting
account of the Tobacco Acts of 1723 and 1729 are

and tells of the cases to be
brought
to trial. One case involved Elizabeth Finnell for
having
a bastard child. This case came to trial in Orange Co,
Court 23 March 1764 The defendant
being warned and failing to
appear
on the motion of Zachary Lewis, Gent. it is considered
that
Elizabeth pay to Era Taylor and Alex Waugh, Church Wardens
of
the Parish of St.Thomas 530 pounds tobacco and cask
or 50
shillings
current money and cask for her having a bastard
child.
Unfortunately the court

this
do not exist. Neither do I know what
became of Elizabeth or
who
she eventually married.

CULPEPER COUNTY
was formed in 1748-9 from the northern part of Orange.
Some of the Finnells, such as Jonathan and Mary, who had made their
purchase
of 100 acres of land in 1738 on a fork of the north side of the
Rapidan
River now found themselves living in Culpeper instead of Orange
County. They had not moved but the county boundary
had. The Rapidan
River
which
had formerly flowed through the center of Orange County now became
the
dividing line and all land lying to the north became the new county
with
the court located at Culpeper Court House.
Several others of the Finnell family moved north into the new county
and
made land purchases there. Charles Finnell of Randolph
County, Missouri
in
his Revolutionary War Pension application of 1834 wrote that he was born
in
Orange County in 1762. "His parents
removed to Culpepper County same
state
when he was very young and took him with them." Charles was a younger
brother
of Reuben and as this was a large family this move brought several
Finnells into Culpeper County. John, Jonathan, Benjamin and Frances, the
widow
of Elijah Finnell all recorded land purchases between
1769 and 1786
in
the new county. Some of the Finnell land purchases in Culpeper
were
later
located in Rappahannock County due to the formation of that county
in
1833 from part of Culpeper.
With the setting aside
of the northern portion of Orange County to
form
Culpeper County the old Courthouse located near
Raccoon Ford on the
south
side of the Rapidan River became outdated as it was
no longer centrally
located. In the June term of court of 1749
arrangements were made for the
erection
of a new court house in the present town or Orange, This was
completed
by July 1752.
Beginning with the year
1755 new first names of a second generation of
Finnells
in Orange County begin to appear in the court records. A few of the
