The Community Location - The Little Black River Indian Reserve is located along the banks of the scenic O'Hanley and Little Black Rivers just off highway 304 which leads to Manigotogan, Hollow Water Indian Reserve and the little gold mining town of Bissett, Manitoba. The water flows relatively smoothly through the community as it continues to the sandy shores of Lake Winnipeg, about half a mile in distance.

All of the 268 plus permanent residents are treaty Indians who speak Saulteaux/Ojibway and the English language.

The community is located on an all weather paved road just 6 kilometres off Highway #304 (the Bisset Highway) 35 kilometres north of Pine Falls. The community is about a two hour drive from Winnipeg.

Recreation - Recreation in the community is found within the activities of bingo, card games and visiting. Recreation around the community includes activities in near-by Hollow Water and Pine Falls, as well as events in Brokenhead, Winnipeg and Selkirk. The area is superb for boating, water skiing, swimming, fishing, hunting, photography, cross country skiing and snowmobiling.

The gymnasium is used for various activities throughout the year. Hockey and fast ball are popular community sports. Treaty day events are popular and all the people are encouraged to participate, including all staff. Education staff are encouraged to participate and volunteer their services pertaining to community recreational growth.

In summary, Little Black River is an ideal place to teach. Parents and students are friendly. Little Black River offers a great variety of outdoor activities and at the same time, gives one a chance to take advantage of southern luxuries.

Community Services - Mail comes in Monday, Wednesday and Friday. A community health representative lives in the community and is on duty every day at the Health Clinic, Monday to Friday from 9:00 a.m. to 5 p.m. A Registered Nurse visits the community every Thrusday. There is an Anglican church in the community. There are also church services in the nearby communities. The community holds their own religious and cultural retreat and events throughout the year.
