Watt Family Group dated 1888, Erie, Kansas.

Seated L to R: Addie Watt Ferris with son Charles, Charles R. Watt, Mary Charissa Watt, Jessie Watt. Standing L to R: Elihu DeForest Watt and Chauncy Ward Watt.

[note from Byron: The following is from a letter from Nancy Underwood]

"Yes, Aunt Jessie Moyer was Addie's sister and her husband was Ela Bliss Moyer and I adored both of them. Uncle Ela was a love and Aunt Jessie reminded me of a little bird flitting around the way she walked. It was my favorite place to visit. When Addie died Aunt Jessie took her place with my mother and they were very close. Uncle Ela used to take my brother and me on nature walks and do all the different bird calls. Another thing he could do which fascinated me was the Gregorian Chant..sounded just like the real thing. It was so sad when he became ill with what people used to call 'hardening of the arteries.' ... Ela and Jessie had three children: John who died when he was five, then Dorothy (Dottie) and Barbara (Bobbie). Both girls married quite late..Dottie was 35 and Bobbie was 38. Dottie suffered from severe depression in her later years and took her own life in 1971. 7 years later Bobbie's husband took his life as well. She died of cancer in 1993. A sad story."

[Another note from Byron: Allen tells me that Uncle Ela (since Jessie was Marion Ferris's aunt, Uncle Ela would be an uncle to Marion Ferris) managed to hold onto his job during the depression, and that he made the house payments for the house on Dover Street in La Grange so that Marion, Ethel, and the children had a place to live. Lillian told me that things were so hard during the depression that some of the boys (of Marion and Ethel) had to leave and live with some of their aunts and uncles for a while.]

Charles Robertson Watt 1841-1891. Born in Dundee, Scotland. Son of George and Mary McAndrew Watt. He was the father of Addie Watt Ferris. Photo taken ca 1887, Sioux City, Iowa. He was shot to death by an intruder while he was working late at his pharmacy. His four year old grandson Charlie Ferris refused to give him a kiss that day as his grandpa left to go to work and always regretted it. The murderer was never caught. The theory is that it was a drug addict there to steal drugs.

George and Mary Watt emigrated to America in 1841 with their two children, at the time, George Jr., age 3 years, and Charles, age 3 months. With them also came George's sister Margaret Watt. They sailed from Liverpool, England in the ship "Alerto" (Alesta [?]) Captained by Master Commander Henry Whiting and landed at the Port of New Orleans on May 16, 1841. (Happily none of the 50-odd passengers died on the voyage) It is not known where the family first settled in America. But their next child was born in Illinois in 1846.

Josephine and Thomas Raymond had 7 children, the eldest of whom was Alice Raymond of whom I often heard Grandfather Ferris speak. [note from Byron: This ancestry was sent to us by Nancy Underwood, so Grandfather Ferris would be Francis Marion Ferris] (Apparently she and our Grandmother [Addie Louise Ferris] were very close.) Nancy Underwood also mentioned that Marion Raymond Ferris got his middle name in honor of Alice Raymond.

From a recent (April 1998) letter from Lillian Morrison:

"Rachael Ingersoll married Elihu Ward and had a daughter Mary Charissa Ward who married Charles R. Watt, and who had 2 daughters--Jessie Watt and Addie Louise Watt. Mary Charissa Ward Watt had a brother Frank Ward, born the same year as Francis Marion Edwards Ferris. Uncle Frank and aunt Winifred used to visit on the farm- were lots of fun. Aunt Winnie would tell stories to us children that she made up. I'm enclosing some picture of them. Also uncle Ela and Aunt Jessie Watt Moyer visited us too, as their pictures show."
