False Concepts Of Salvation
(things that people believe will allow them to go to heaven that are not true)
1. My Good Works Outweigh My Bad Works (The Balance of Scales Concept)
People say the good that they have done far outweighs the bad (which literally may be true). They say that they have only done a few bad things, they haven't committed adultery, the don't steel, they go to church every Sunday, they work every day, they're honest businessman, etc. the list goes on and that is why God owes them a place in heaven.
Two of the verses that support this:
Ephesians 2:8-9
For by grace you have been saved through faith; and that not of yourselves, it is the gift of God; not as a result of works, that no one should boast.
Titus 3:5
He saved us, not on the basis of deeds which we have done in righteousness, but according to his mercy, by the washing of regeneration and renewing of the Holy Spirit.
2. But No One is Perfect or I Don't Commit Any "BIG" Sins
It doesn't matter what sin you committed, they are all the same, if it's murder, robbery, speeding, lying, it still makes you a terrible sinner, and without God will go to hell for it.
James 2:10
For whoever keeps the whole law and yet stumbles in one point, he has become guilty of all.
Matthew 22:37-39
And He said to him, "You shall love the Lord you God with all your hear, and with all your soul, and with all your mind," this is the great and foremost commandment. And a second is like it, "You shall love your neighbor as yourself."
So because we have disobeyed these two great commandments we are all great sinners, do not deserve to go to heaven and without Jesus Christ will go to hell.
Romans 6:23
For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.
Matthew 5:21-22
21 "You have heard that the ancients were told, `You shall not commit murder' and `Whoever commits murder shall be liable to the court.' 22 "But I say to you that everyone who is angry with his brother shall be guilty before the court; and whoever shall say to his brother, `Raca,' shall be guilty before the supreme court; and whoever shall say, `You fool,' shall be guilty enough to go into the fiery hell.
3. Someone might say, "But I Keep the Ten Commandments"
Ironically, no one has ever been able to keep the ten commandments, everyone has at one time unless you are a very young baby, have not honored your mother or father. So the trick is, how are you going to get rid of that sin that you committed?
Galatians 2:16
nevertheless knowing that a man is not justified by the works of the law but through faith in Christ Jesus, even we have believed in Jesus Christ, that we may be justified by faith in Christ, and NOT by the works of the law; since by the works of the Law shall no flesh be justified.
Galatians 3:10-11
For as many as are of the works of the law are under a curse; for it is written, "Cursed is everyone who does not abide by all things written in the book of the law to perform them. Now that no one is justified by the Law before God.
Romans 10:9-10
that if you confess with your mouth Jesus as Lord, and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you shall be saved.
4. I am a Church Member or Morally I'm a Good Person
People might ask someone, "are you a Christian?" and their answer might be, well I'm a Baptist, or I'm a Lutheran, Catholic, etc. But it's not going to church, it's the faith, not having your name written in some church book. So if you don't have the faith the church won't help.
Revelation 20:15
And if anyone's name was not found written in the book of life, he was thrown in the lake of fire.
Romans 8:8-9
and those who are in flesh cannot please God. However you are not in the flesh but in the Spirit, if indeed the Spirit of God dwells in you. But if anyone does not have the Spirit of Christ, he does not belong to Him.
5. You Have a "Mental" Assent (or acceptance), You Believe the Facts
You can know about someone or something but do you really know them? you know the facts about ex-president Ronald Regan but you don't really know him as a person.
James 2:17-20
Even so faith, if it has no works is dead, being by itself. But someone may say, "you have faith, and I have works' show me your faith without the works, and I will show you my faith by my works." You believe that God is one. you do well; the demons also believe, and shudder. But are you willing to recognize, you foolish fellow, that faith without works is useless?
Matthew 8:29
And behold, they (demons) cried out saying, "What do we have to do with You, Son of God? Have you come to torment us before the time?"
The demons do have faith (knowledge), they know and believe that there is a hell and a judgment but they have no works.
