Reasons Why Jesus Chose Judas Iscariot

1. It furnished Christ an opportunity to show His perfection.

- Jesus loved someone that hated Him and that He knew was going to betray Him

2. It provided an impartial witness to the moral excellency of Christ

- Judas knew what Jesus was really like
- the behind-behind-the-sceners
- Judas was going to tell it as it is

Matthew 27:3-5
3 Then when Judas, who had betrayed Him, saw that He had been condemned, he felt remorse and returned the thirty pieces of silver to the chief priests and elders, 4 saying, "I have sinned by betraying innocent blood." But they said, "What is that to us? See to that yourself!" 5 And he threw the pieces of silver into the temple sanctuary and departed; and he went away and hanged himself.

3. It shows/uncovers the awfulness of sin

- Judas knew Jesus was innocent and still betrayed Jesus -> that's the power of sin
- it (sin) destroyed Judas

By allowing it to be conceived in your heart…

John 13:2
During supper, the devil having already put into the heart of Judas Iscariot, the son of Simon, to betray Him,

You open the door to satan to come in:

John 13:27
After the morsel, Satan then entered into him. Therefore Jesus said to him, "What you do, do quickly."

4. Judas gives sobering warning to sinners of all generations.

- a person may come near to Christ but be lost
- he was in charge of the money box
- was a smart educated man
- you must be born again (John 3:7)

5. It tells us that we may expect to find hypocrites among the followers of Christ.

- there are imposters in the body of Christ
- Judas pretended to be a believer
- he forsook the world and followed Jesus
- he preached the Gospel, he went on crusades
- people even got saved from his preaching

John 13:20
"Truly, truly, I say to you, he who receives whomever I send receives Me; and he who receives Me receives Him who sent Me."

- he was trusted with their money
- BUT Judas was following his own agenda
- he used Jesus to make himself important à the spirit of self-interest

6. It shows us that we should place no confidence in any man including ourselves.

Psalm 118:8
It is better to take refuge in the LORD than to trust in man.

Romans 3:4
May it never be! Rather, let God be found true, though every man be found a liar, as it is written, "THAT YOU MAY BE JUSTIFIED IN YOUR WORDS, AND PREVAIL WHEN YOU ARE JUDGED."

- people put their faith in medicine, stocks, education, wisdom, abilities, government, the American dream.
- don't boast in things:

Jeremiah 9:24
but let him who boasts boast of this, that he understands and knows me, that I am the LORD who exercises lovingkindness, justice and righteousness on earth; for I delight in these things," declares the LORD.

- people live in the attitude, "eat and drink, for tomorrow we may die.":

Isaiah 22:13
Instead, there is gaiety and gladness, killing of cattle and slaughtering of sheep, eating of meat and drinking of wine: "Let us eat and drink, for tomorrow we may die."

7. To show how radically different God's ways are from ours

- if we know Judas we wouldn't have chosen him

8. It gives us hope that He would choose us too

- if he would have chosen the "son of perdition" He'd choose me too

John 17:12
"While I was with them, I was keeping them in Your name which You have given Me; and I guarded them and not one of them perished but the son of perdition, so that the Scripture would be fulfilled.

also

9. So that the scriptures might be fulfilled

Psalm 41:9
Even my close friend in whom I trusted, who ate my bread, has lifted up his heel against me.

Matthew 26:23-24
23 And He answered, "He who dipped his hand with Me in the bowl is the one who will betray Me. 24 "The Son of Man is to go, just as it is written of Him; but woe to that man by whom the Son of Man is betrayed! It would have been good for that man if he had not been born."

Acts 1:16
"Brethren, the Scripture had to be fulfilled, which the Holy Spirit foretold by the mouth of David concerning Judas, who became a guide to those who arrested Jesus.
