Class notes #2 We are going to start tomake the doll. Making the doll requires NO experience. Just some muslin and a bag of stuffing and for the moment 1 disk set. As you read in the book, you will see an alternative head. The key to making a baseball style head is actually matching the chin marking. That is the small point of the chin and matching it to the slight bump or peak in the fold of the head sides. Just look at a baseball. and it should fall into place. The head is always teh first to be made. Remember to clip curves so that teh dol ehad looks like a childs head. Thast why pinking shears are so great. They make the littlle V cuts so that its like clipping curves but without the danger of clipping the threads. When making the head, its always a good idea to shpae the chin and forhead and place stuffinga round the perimiter and then stuff to thecenter. That way the shape of the chins etc are formed. When inserting the disks to the bototm of the neck, you will ahve to cut out 2 fabric disks to cover it. Instead opf seing in ontop of the openeing, insert the fabric into the opening ontop of the disks and sew the pouter edge onto it. It may work alittle backwards but the effect is more stable. Whe you are done with making the head, place the eyes in place and stitch the eyes into teh fabric. Whemn stitching the eyes, you want them at a very very slight upward angle. And poulled deep into the head to form sockets. Biut not so deep as they get lost. The " gofun" covering will be built up in layers and then a slice taken out. so it will look like eyelids. Hand sew the ears into place. When you have accomplished this you are ready to dip the head. Dipping the head is always the next step. Your first two dips or sprays or which ever method you choose will be the stiffening agent.
