Welcome to Papa Jim's Place

Hi! By now you've probably guessed that my name is Jim. The Papa part comes from the handle given to me by my grandkids in Medicine Hat.

I'm at the top of the hill (53), and was married to my wife Sandra for over 30 wonderful years before she went home to the Lord. During that time we raised 4 wonderful children. The two boys, Darrell and Kelly, live in Toronto. Rhonda, our oldest daughter, and Tracey our youngest daughter and her husband Bryan all live in Medicine Hat, Alberta. I am now in the process of thoroughly enjoying the second generation of kids, namely the grandkids who have graciously nicknamed me Papa Jim. They are, in no specific order, Kelsey, Natachia, Alyssa, Ryan, and Tiffany, and little Zachery Ty who arrived with us on the 6th of November 1997. He and his big sister, Alyssa and their mamma and papa are all doing well in the Hat. To see some pictures of Zachary and his big sister, Alyssa CLICK HERE. For more family photos CLICK HERE.

As for myself, I spent almost 22 years in the Royal Canadian Navy, from 1965 to 1986 initially as a Naval Airman (Air bos'n) and later after intigration as a fire fighter. I served on Canada's last aircraft carrier, HMCS Bonaventure , several DDH class destroyers incuding my last ship HMCS Saguenay, and numerous shore establishments including HMCS, Cornwallis, Glochester, Shearwater and Stadaconna. Also I served posting duty time at CFB Downsview, CFB Borden and finally at CFS Yorkton as the station Fire Chief. I even did a tour as a fire service instructor at the military fire fighting academy in Ontario at CFSAOE in Borden for 5 years where I had the opportunity to hone my fire fighting skills. Check the link below for the 651er's FireHouse site below. Its great....

For the past 14 years (1986-2000), I was employed as the Deputy Fire Chief in charge of the Operations and Training Division with the City of Yorkton Fire Department . Effective the 1st of January 2001 I will or will have assumed the role of Chief of the Department. A job that Im really looking forward to. As this web site progresses I hope to have more information and pictures about our department. We're a relatively small department with a staff of 16 full time and 14 volunteer fire fighters, 3 chief officers and an a half time office manager. We have 2 modern (1992 & 1987) fully equipped front line 1050gpm pumpers and a 1992 50" telesquirt unit also with a 1050 gpm pump. We also include in our fleet inventory a fully self-contained rescue/command vehicle, one 1997 utility vehicle outfitted for command work and a 1991 mini van for utility and back up work. We may be small but we're really good at what we do, so watch for more information in the near future.

One of the main reasons I got involved on the net was because of the fact that for almost 15 years now I have been a Type 2 diabetic. I have been involved with the Canadian Diabetes Association now for the past 8 years. Four of those as president of the local Yorkton Branch and for two years I served on the provincial division board as a zone representative. In May (1999) I was re-elected to the position of Saskatchewan Division President for CDA for a second term. This is definately a job which I really enjoyed sinking my teeth into, and now Im the past president. I graduated to insulin just about 3 years ago now(supper time and bed time) and would really like to hear from others who have recently made this life change as well. I have met many wonderful and kind people during my travels in cyberspace relating to diabetes. I'd also like to say a very special "HELLO" to some people I consider my special friends. They are MemphisJan (my twinnie in crime), LondonTim, and Cybermama Alice. My PIC's, Mia and Duane, and Anomali, all of whom are long time buddies but now there is a few new additions to my gang and Ruth from Ohio and Bud & Ruth (G1 & G2) from Alaska. Welcome guys and hope you dont mind being plastered up here on my hope page.

There's also Bacca Jean (the Grin Queen) who is VERY special because she is the first person I met on the net, and without her help, encouragement, and support, I might not have actually taken up the task of promoting diabetes in Yorkton. So this is me and my page and I hope you enjoy it and come back from time to time to scope out the updates and changes that I plan on.

Im also using ICQ as a communicator program so if you use it as well give me a call and we can chat. My ICQ number is 333629.

My hobbies include camping, curling, watching Junior hockey, working with the Canadian Diabetes Association (see link), having a ball with my grandchildren, surfing the pooter and spending way toooooooo much time on ICQ with the gang. If you're really interested in a cool "real time chat program" drop me a note and I will send you all you need to know to get started chatting with the rest of us on ICQ. It's a definite winner in my books. The links below have been updated and I have a few to add but if you find one thats not working please let me know..

Before you go on, I must heap mountains of praise on my "SugarTwin" MemphisJan for urging me on to do this homepage, but more importantly, for designing and creating it for me. She is such a wizard. So Jan, please take a bow!
