WOW - just went through your web site references - I know I am connected into
this family. Let me show you what I know thus far off of death certificates.
My Grandfather
John Clayton Blackwell b June 8, 1882 d. Oct 30, 1958, married to Mary Anne
Kolhaas born in Hazelton Pennsylvania
My Great Grandfather
William Blackwell. b Nov 17, 1856, d. Jan 10, 1923 born in Pennsylvania
married to almena Krapt (b. Germany). Fathers name was Lewis A. Blackwell b.
Pennsylvania. Informants name was Ethel blackwell.
My Great Great Grandfather
Lewis G. Blackwell b. 4/13/1826 b. Hackettstown NJ, married???? Fathers name
was Robert Blackwell, b. Hackettstown, NJ. Informants signature - William A.
Blasskwell from Hazelton Pa.
I believe that this Robert Blackwell is Robert L. Blackwell b. 1790, wife may
be Julliett Iddings or Sarah B - not sure -
Robert Blackwell would be the son of Elijah Blackwell b. Mar 7, 1761 in
Hunterdon Co., NJ, D 1839 in Independence Twp, Warren Co. NJ married to Martha
Lanning b. Aug 20, 1762 died in Hackettstown JN married Mar 20, 1781.
Elijah Blackwell was the son of Francis Blackwell b. Jan 14, 1712/13 married
to Elizabeth Cornell, and Francis was the son of Robert Blackwell b. bef 1676
on Newton LI, d 1757 Hunterdon Co. NJ married Elizabeth Combs m Mar 6,
1709-10, and Robert was the son of Robert Blackwell married to Mary
Manningham. I know there are a lot of Hallets in this line off of Robert son
of Robert and Mary Manningham.
Really need help in connecting my Lewis G. Blackwell to Robert Blackwell born
in Hackettstown, NJ and also finding out who his wife was. Although I am
reasonably sure that Robert was born in 1790 and Lewis was born in 1826 which
would have made Robert nearly 36 years old when he was born this is quite
possible. I also don't know anythig about Lewis's brothers and sisters. I
know that Robert b. 1790 was shown as 60 years old on the 1850 Census and was
still alive at that time. Please keep in touch. I have been told that
somewhere there is a book that was published on this line but for the life of
me I don't know where to find it. Heard that at one time it was in the
Cornell University library - but they don't know what became of it. It may be
somewhere in a library in Manhattan. I live two hours from NYC and can head
into a library if I know the book might be there. Also NJ is only a couple of
hours away from me.

I am interested in posting a query in your Blackwell News Letter. I have
been doing genealogy research for about 1 year now. I have had pretty good
luck with my Blackwell line. If this info helps someone else great if it
helps me get new contacts, great too.
My Blackwell line starts June 2, 1643. In England with Robert Blackwell,
he shows up in Queens Co. or Long Island NY around 1650. Robert Blackwell
marries Mary Manningham, April 26,1676, (this is his 2nd wife, 1st wife has
not been proven)
Mary Manningham's Step father is Capt. Manning, who gives Robert Blackwell
& Mary Manningham, Manning Island, which was renamed Blackwell Island. It
remained Blackwell Island for over 200 years. The government who owned the
Island changed the name to Welfare Island in the 1920's & to Roosevelt
Island in the 1960's. Which is what it is called today.
TimeLine NYC10044 This
is a timeline it shows the Original Blackwell house, which still stands. The
Blackwell's also owned land on Long Island. Robert can be found in the
Annals of Newton. Along with several other Blackwell's from this line.
Here is another web site about the island
Blackwell's Island Part 1
Robert had a son named Robert Blackwell b-1670 d-1757 Robert married
Elizabeth combs. Robert bought land in the decade of 1700 - 1710 in
Pennington, NJ. (Hopewell Township) A house was built there known as the
Nathaniel Blackwell house, it remained in the Blackwell family til 1872.
Robert's son Francis b-Jan 14, 1713 d-Nov. 11, 1791 was the builder of
the oldest section (abt. 1740) & probably the second as well. (abt. 1785) the
3rd section was built by Nathaniel Blackwell & his brother Colonel Johnathan
Blackwell. (abt. 1815) Francis m- Elizabeth Cornel.l
Francis had a son named Francis b-July 20, 1746 in Hopewell Township, NJ d-
before 1820 in Kaskasskia, IL. he married Elizabeth Hart.
They had a son named Jeremiah Blackwell b-Jan. 12, 1783 in Hopewell
Township, NJ. d-Jan. 25, 1855 in St. Francios Co., MO. After the war of 1812 many settlers came to MO. from Kentucky & Tennessee. These people were given land grants, sometimes for services rendered in the war. Jeremiah was a soldier in the war of 1812 & recieved one of these land grants. Signed by President of the U.S., "James Monroe" signed May 1, 1824. Blackwell, MO was named in his honor. As was Blackwell Station.
Jeremiah had a son named William b- March 12, 1810 in Kentucky d-March 1,
1870
in Washington Co., MO. William married Elizabeth Cummings. William was 8
years old when he moved to MO with his family & slaves.
William had a daughter named Elizabeth b-March 15, 1861 d-Apr. 8, 1923, she
married Thomas L. Welch

Dear Joe:
What are the dates of your George Washington Blackwell? There is a W Geo
Blackwell who served in the War of 1812, Pvt.- in Col. Edwin Booth &
Capt. Jophn Lewis, East Tenn. Mil. He married in Rhea Co. and lived
there. My Strother Blackwell and a Geo. W. Blackwell served in the same
unit. James served in Col Edwin Booth, Capt. George Wintons's , E. Tn
Mil, transferred to Capt John Sutton's Co. George W. married Nancy Bush
or Bushyhead. I believe he went to Missouri. Our Strother went to
Henderson Co., TN between 1820 and 1830. I have not ordered George W.'s
or James military record or to see if they received a pension or bounty
land.

Please give me a little time on the Blackwells. I have a family group
sheet of George Washington and Nancy Bushyhead. From a book, "Rhea &
Meigs Co., TN 1808 through 1850" by Betty J. Broyles, tax records "1819
- Capt John Ramsey's Co. James Blackwell - 1 wp (white poll); 1823 Capt.
Jackson's Co., George W. Blackwell - 1 wp; Capt. McGill's Co. Nathan
Blackwell - 1 wp; Capt. Jackson's Co. - Strother Blackwell - 1 wp." I
feel that Geo W and Strother had to know each other. I have not yet
established any parents for Strother.
1830 Rhea Co. census lists a Charles Blackwell & James Blackwell
1840 Meigs Census - Elizabeth Blackwell; Nathaniel Blackwell; & William
Blackwell.
My records show the marriage of George W. Blackwell to Nancy Bush 19 Oct
1819 & Strohter Blackwell to Rebecca Marnes or Morris. (I don't believe
this is true, because in his pension app he says he married Rebecca
Hopper.; however, she could have been married before.) By 1830, they are
in Henderson Co., TN, and continue to live there in 1840, 1850. We think
they were in White Co. AR, in 1860 and back in Henderson Co., TN by
1870. Strother dies between 1870 & 1880. I descend through Strother's
son, Joseph Blackwell. My grandmother was Alice Katherine Blackwell, dau. of Joseph & Mary Jane Delph. On the same page George W. was listed under the Cherokee Removal muster roll 1836 and an Isaiah M. Blackwell is listed under the Cherokee Removal muster roll, 1836.
Meigs Co. TN 1850 Census has an Alfred Blackwell age 27; Joab Blackwell,
age 35 and William Blackwell, age 38 (all with families).
Strother and Washington (sometimes George W.) appear on the Tax rolls of
Capt. Samuel McDaniel's Co. for 1821; 1822; 1823. At this point Strother
does not appear again on the Rhea Co. tax list, but George is there
through 1828.
I have Strother's military service record and his Pension and Bounty
Land applications. Had planned to order James & George W.'s soon.
Will try to locate the family group sheet of Geo. W. and get back with
you.
Sincerely, Mary K. Nowlin

Dear Joe,
Will copy the letter I received from one of Geo. W.'s descendants it is
as follows:
"Dear Mary,
I'm sorry I haven't anything in all my records on Strother Blackwell. I
have traced my line back to England. I think I have all the brothers &
sisters.
There were three brothers who came from England in the 1600's. Joseph
settled in VA, Robert in Long Island [NY], & Samuel in Caswell Co.,N.C.
My line is Joseph.
I don't do much research now, except by mail. I have found that death certificates are easier to get than birth, and have a lot of information. I've found Tennessee hard to get information from. So whenI got pass (sic) the 1850 census, I started working from both directions from the 1600's backward. Also think Strother may of been his mother's maiden name.
I'm enclosing some book titles that might help. Most large libraries
have them or will order them.
I. Ancestors & Descendants & Connections of Moore Carter
Blackwell, Sarah Alexander Foote by Cdr Edward Edward
Blackwell (Old Dominian Press, Richmond, 1948.
II. Americans of Gentle Birth, Vol. I. by Pittman
III. Virginia Genealogies
By the way George W. Blackwell's parents were John & Ann Blackwell. If
you tie in some place I will send you copies.
Good Luck

I am descended from the Blackwells of Lunenburg. I have known of the
connection of the Blackwell and Ussery as far as the records show it
but I was unaware of any marriage between the two families. The first
Blackwell to come to Lunenburg was James Glenn Blackwell who came to
the county about the time it was created. He was in the county with
his two son, Robert and John, who have had much written about them.
However, I believe that there was a third son, James as is shown by
the data from Order Book 2 (below).
From Order Book 2, page 385 April Court 1751 - Lunenburg County,
Virginia
. . . church warden of Cumberland Parish to bind out James Blackwell,
orphan of James Blackwell, dec'd to William Bargamy (carpenter) . . .
If there was a third son people did not know about there may be one of
more daughters also. Do you have any information on possible dates
when John Ussery or Sarah Blackwell were born pr wwhen they may have
married or the year any of their supposed children were born. Things
like these might help make a connection.

"Kreh, Tim"
Hi all. I've been at a dead end with my Blackwells from day one, and
I'm looking for any clues. If any of you know of any other researchers
who may be able to help me, I would appreciate a reference. Thanks for
your time. Any info on the following family would be greatly
appreciated:
Catherine BLACKWELL b. ca 1780 m. ca 1799 in Culpeper Co., VA to
Townsend BUTLER. The original mg. record is lost, but the minister's
return remains. They were married by John Hickerson, pastor of the
Hedgman's River Baptist Church, formerly in Fauquier County, VA. They
named their first son Carter BUTLER. Other given names passed through
the next couple of generations were Armistead, Douglass, John, James,
Lovely.
I can find no mention of her Blackwell parentage. Prior to its
formation, the Hedgman's River Baptist Church was part of the Carter's
Run Baptist Church of Fauquier county. Some land was donated in
Southern Fauquier for the Hedgman's church, but the church was actually
built on the Culpeper side of the boundary. The Pickett family were
also members.
I have found a bridge bond record in Fauquier county from the mid 1700s
where a Joseph Blackwell is mentioned in the building of a road near
Hedgman's River.
Sometime after 1820, the Butlers removed to Fauquier County, VA where in
1823 Carter Butler m. Elizabeth CAYNER.
Any help greatly appreciated.
