The first quilt I ever made was a red, blue & plaid patchwork think backed with old striped fabric I had lying around the house. I made it for my then 5 year old son who was undergoing many sleepness nights because of his asthma, and we were waaiting for the nebulizer meds to kick in. The quilt was completed New Years Day 1989. That was the first night he slept through in almost two months. The doctor credited the medicine, we credited the quilt. OK, it looed awful, was tied with yarn, and wasn't 100 percent cotton. Who cared?!? The kid loved it and he used it every night for years.
My son is now 14 years old. We still have that quilt. In fact, it's on my couch right now. Since then I've made about a dozen more bed sized quilts and countless minis in all shapes and sizes. The second quilt was from a kit and I vowed "never again" after that experience. Like all good sew-ers, I have a few UFO's around even as I type. There's a rail-fence upstairs half quilted and the fabric for a log cabin are waiting to be cut, having been pre-washed and pressed almost 4 months ago. It was hard to think of quilting when the temperature and humidity were both over 90. Now that Fall is here I have no more excuses.
